Using an AI music generator does not automatically make a track legally safe, give you copyright in the whole recording, or clear every voice, sample, and reference you supplied. Before publishing, check the tool’s license for your plan and intended use, get consent for identifiable voices, avoid copying protected songs or artists, and keep records of your own creative contributions. In the United States, the Copyright Office says material generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable; prompts alone do not make you its author, though human-authored parts of a mixed work may be protected. What Legal Safety Means For An AI Music Release

There are separate questions: whether you have permission under the service’s terms to use a generated track, whether your use might infringe someone else’s rights, and whether you can claim copyright in your own contribution. A product’s commercial-use license addresses the first question as described by that vendor; it is not a guarantee that a track is original, copyrightable, or free of claims.

The Copyright Office’s findings are specific to U.S. copyright. They do not establish the law in other countries. If registration matters, the Office says applicants must disclose more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material and describe the human author’s contribution. U.S. Copyright Office report on AI

Check The Product Terms Before You Publish

These services describe different commercial-use conditions. The table summarizes only the stated terms; check the linked vendor page and applicable plan terms for your release, territory, distribution method, and current conditions.

Service Stated use terms Practical check
Suno The Free Plan does not include commercial rights. Suno says songs made while a paid subscriber can be used commercially. Confirm your plan and when the song was created; retain the plan and track records.
Eleven Music Commercial rights vary by subscription tier. Its directory listing says they exclude film, TV, and studio games. Check the exact tier and whether your project falls into an excluded use.
Musicful Musicful describes a non-exclusive, perpetual license for downloaded tracks and says it retains ownership. Commercial licensing is limited to Standard/Pro plans; Free/Basic is non-commercial. Verify plan eligibility and save the license certificate if provided.
Tunee Free creations are for personal projects with attribution. Tunee says paid subscribers receive commercial rights, while also cautioning that copyright law is evolving and protection cannot be guaranteed. Check your plan’s current terms and preserve attribution if using a free creation personally.
Ecrett Music Its Individual and Business plans license commercial projects and YouTube monetization; each license applies to the individual or company, respectively. Ecrett says the service is for music in content, not distribution as a music file; its terms prohibit distributing the music in music format.

Protect Voices, Covers, Samples, And References

A paid plan does not replace consent from a person whose recognizable voice you imitate or use. Spotify says vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized it. Spotify policy announcement reported by Music Business Worldwide

  • Voices: Use your own voice or obtain clear permission from the person whose voice is identifiable. Tunee and Mureka list voice cloning, but that feature description does not establish consent or rights to clone any particular person.
  • Covers and artist references: Do not assume that an AI-generated cover or a prompt naming an artist is authorized. Musicful advises against directly copying copyrighted works or protected content from specific artists. Check the service terms and obtain any permissions required for the material and release.
  • Samples and uploads: Upload only audio you have permission to use for that purpose. A service accepting reference audio does not establish that you have rights to upload, transform, or publish it.

Use A Safer Creation And Release Workflow

  1. Choose the destination first. Write down whether the track is for a personal video, monetized channel, client project, advertisement, game, or standalone release. A license may permit one use and restrict another.
  2. Start with an original brief. Describe musical qualities in your own words, such as “slow instrumental with brushed percussion, warm bass, and a restrained piano motif.” Avoid asking for a named artist’s voice, a specific existing song, or a melody copied from a recording.
  3. Use only cleared inputs. Keep prompts, lyrics, recordings, and reference audio that you created or have permission to use. For an AI vocal, use a consenting vocalist or a voice the service terms expressly allow you to use.
  4. Save evidence as you work. Keep dated prompts, edits, lyrics, session exports, receipts or plan details, license certificates, and permissions. These records help explain what you contributed and what terms applied when you generated or downloaded the track.
  5. Review the final audio and the platform rules. Listen for recognizable borrowed material or an unauthorized voice imitation. If publishing on YouTube, disclose realistic altered or synthetic content when it could be mistaken for a real person’s performance. YouTube disclosure guidance reported by TechCrunch
  6. Make any required AI disclosure. Spotify says it supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits. YouTube labels realistic altered or synthetic content; platform rules address different issues, so check the current upload and metadata requirements for each destination.
  7. Describe your human contribution accurately. If you apply to register a work containing more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material in the United States, disclose that material and describe the human-authored contribution as the Copyright Office requires. Keep Platform And Copyright Limits In View

A license from a generator does not promise that a distributor, video platform, or other rights holder will never raise a claim. Spotify has announced protections against unauthorized vocal impersonation and spam uploads, while YouTube’s inauthentic-content policy targets mass-produced, repetitive, or template-based uploads rather than AI use by itself. When a project depends on a disputed voice, a recognizable borrowed melody, a commercial placement, or copyright registration, the facts here cannot determine whether your specific use is lawful. Read the current service and platform terms, and seek qualified legal advice for a high-stakes release.
