To make a song, start with one clear idea, shape it into a verse and chorus, find a melody and chords that carry the words, then record or generate a draft and revise it by listening. What You Need Before You Start
You do not need to know music theory or own recording equipment to begin. Decide what the song is about, who is speaking, and what you want the listener to feel or understand. Keep the first version small: a verse that sets up the idea, a chorus that states its central thought, and a melody you can remember.

- Choose a point of view and a mood. These are creative choices, not settings a particular tool is guaranteed to support.

How to Make a Song Step by Step
- Write the chorus idea. Put the song’s main thought into one or two short lines. Sing the lines aloud and simplify any phrase that is hard to say naturally.
- Build a verse around it. Give the listener a scene, detail, or change that makes the chorus feel earned. Avoid repeating the chorus in different words.
- Set a simple structure. Start with verse, chorus, verse, chorus. Add a bridge only if it introduces a new perspective or musical lift. Revise a line, section, or musical part, then listen again instead of changing everything at once.
- Save a version you can return to. Keep the lyric, chord idea, and audio draft together. Song Cage’s Free plan is limited to one song, and PDF and MIDI export require a paid plan. Use only voices and recordings you have permission to use, and check the terms of the service you use before uploading material or sharing or releasing a result. Terms and rights can differ by platform and plan, so do not assume a generated song is cleared for every use. The U.S. Copyright Office says works generated entirely by AI are not copyrightable, prompts alone do not make someone the author, and only human-authored parts of a mixed work may be protected. Applicants registering a work containing more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material must disclose it and describe the human author’s contribution. What to Check Before You Keep the Draft
- Can you sing the chorus without looking at the words?
- Does each verse add a detail or development rather than restate the premise?
- Are the vocal, chords, and arrangement supporting the same emotional direction?
