What it is
Finch is a free, open-source tool for local container development, available on macOS, Windows and Linux. It provides a native client for upstream container projects and brings together Lima, nerdctl, containerd and BuildKit. Its command-line interface supports Docker Compose-compatible commands, so a Compose command can be translated to Finch’s compose form. Finch also covers a majority of Visual Studio Code Dev Container use cases. Developers can sign and verify container images with cosign using self-managed keys. On macOS, registry credentials use the encrypted Keychain by default. Installation requirements vary: Windows requires WSL 2 and administrative privileges; macOS also requires administrative privileges and recommends at least 2 vCPU and 4 GB of memory; the Linux guide lists kernel v4.x or newer. Finch is intended as a developer tool, not for production use, especially multi-tenant workloads. Its macOS and Windows virtual machine does not provide a security boundary. Finch does not support Windows wincred or Linux secretservice system stores. Issues can be reported through its GitHub repository; AWS customers with Developer-tier or higher support can open technical support tickets.
