Overview

Flycast emulates Sega Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, and Atomiswave; its Android listing also names System SP arcade games. It says most Dreamcast titles run, including Windows CE games, but that does not guarantee compatibility with every title. This range is useful for players who want a single emulator for console and arcade libraries rather than a Dreamcast-only option.

Game files are not included and must be owned by the user. A Dreamcast BIOS is not required, removing one setup dependency. Controller support and online multiplayer are supported, while RetroAchievements and modem and LAN adapter emulation add options for players interested in network-era features. The Android update notes also mention Power Smash online support.

Key features

Graphics and saves

The Android version supports high-definition and widescreen rendering, OpenGL and Vulkan, and custom high-definition texture packs. These settings give players ways to tailor presentation, though they are options rather than a promise that every game will look or perform the same. Android users also get 10 save-state slots, useful for preserving progress outside a game's own save system.

Build choices

Flycast offers regular master builds, experimental nightly development builds, and versioned stable releases. The project describes master as relatively stable, while warning that other branches may be unstable, crash, or refuse to run. For most users, avoiding experimental branches is the sensible trade-off; they are better suited to those willing to accept failures in exchange for trying development builds.

Pricing

Flycast is free: the Flycast plan costs 0.00 USD per free and has no ads. The plan does not include game files, which users must own and provide themselves. There are no paid tiers to weigh against the free option, so the main cost is the time and care needed to supply compatible files and choose an appropriate build.

Platforms

Flycast supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. The README says Xbox One and Series builds can be installed through Xbox Device Portal, but iOS support has been dropped. Those looking for an iPhone or iPad version should choose another option.

Who it's for

Flycast suits players with Dreamcast and Sega arcade game libraries who value broad system coverage, rendering choices, controller support, and online features in a free emulator. It is less appropriate for anyone expecting bundled games, an iOS app, or a build with no risk of instability across every branch.

The project directs users to its Discord server for discussion. Its repository uses the GPL-2.0 license. Google Play's developer-provided privacy disclosure says no data is collected or shared with third parties and that data is encrypted in transit.

Pros and cons

Pros: Emulates Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, and Atomiswave, with System SP support also named for Android; valuable for players with mixed Sega libraries.
Pros: High-definition and widescreen options, two graphics APIs, and custom texture packs on Android give users meaningful presentation choices.
Pros: Free, ad-free use and no Dreamcast BIOS requirement reduce purchase and setup barriers.
Cons: Game files are not included and must be owned by the user, so Flycast is not a ready-to-play library.
Cons: Branches other than master may be unstable, crash, or fail to run, making build selection important.
Cons: iOS support has been dropped, ruling it out for players seeking a current iPhone or iPad version.

Alternatives

MAME is another free option for Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows; choose it if you want a GPL-2.0-or-later emulator and are comfortable sourcing ROMs and copyrighted software separately. nullDC 2.0.0 is free and offers Linux, macOS, Windows, and web platforms, making it worth considering if web access matters more than Android support.

Flycast is another free Flycast entry covering Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows, with Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, and Atomiswave emulation. WashingtonDC is a free, open-source GNU GPL version 3 project for Linux and Windows from a one-person team; it is an alternative for users seeking that platform and licensing combination.

Flycast is a free, open-source option for Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Deecy is free for Linux and Windows, from a developer who describes himself as based in France.

Redream offers a free plan on Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows, plus a one-time Premium payment of 6.00 USD; it may suit readers who prefer a paid upgrade option. Nitrocast is a free option for Linux.

Dreamcast Emulators is a broader category to browse when you want to compare more choices.

Verdict

Choose Flycast if you want a free emulator spanning Dreamcast and several Sega arcade systems, with graphics and online options to explore. Its broad coverage is the strongest reason to pick it; look elsewhere if you need iOS support, bundled game files, or assurance that experimental builds will behave reliably.
