Spec score 8.0 #7 of 29 in Serverless Platforms

What it is

Knative is open-source Kubernetes middleware for building, deploying, and managing serverless workloads. Knative Serving handles stateless HTTP services, including deployment, routing, and automatic scaling. Services can scale from zero when idle and rise again with incoming traffic. Serving also supports blue-green deployments, canary releases, and traffic splitting between revisions. Knative Eventing routes asynchronous events through CloudEvents over HTTP. Knative Functions provides a framework for packaging stateless functions as containers. Installation can use a local quickstart or a production setup on an existing Kubernetes cluster with YAML or the Knative Operator. The project runs on Kubernetes across cloud providers and on-premises environments, with Linux, macOS, and Windows listed for installation. Integrations include Istio, Contour, Gateway API, Kafka, RabbitMQ, and NATS. The open-source plan is free, with self-managed Kubernetes deployment.

Strong points and limits

Strong points

  • Scales stateless services to zero and back
  • Supports canary, blue-green, and split traffic releases
  • Routes asynchronous events with CloudEvents over HTTP
  • Offers functions packaged as containers
  • Runs across cloud and on-premises Kubernetes

Limits

  • Self-managed installation requires a Kubernetes cluster
  • Alpha features may change or be removed
  • Security depends partly on chosen routing and transport components

Who it suits

Knative suits teams building serverless services and event-driven workloads on Kubernetes. It is relevant to operators needing portable deployments across cloud or on-premises clusters.

Verdict

Knative provides serving, eventing, and functions components around Kubernetes, with flexible installation and networking options. Teams must account for self-management and the maturity limits attached to alpha features.
