What it is

Kube-router is a free, open-source Kubernetes networking solution for Linux and self-hosted clusters. It combines pod networking, service load balancing, network policy enforcement, and BGP-based service advertisement. Linux IPVS/LVS provides Layer 4 balancing for ClusterIP, NodePort, and LoadBalancer services. BGP exchanges pod routes between nodes, while iptables, ipset, and conntrack enforce Kubernetes Network Policies. Kube-router can advertise service virtual IPs to Layer 3 BGP peers for ECMP load balancing. It runs as a node agent or as a Pod in a DaemonSet on each node. Documented deployments include kops, kubeadm, k0s, k3s, and generic Kubernetes clusters, with kops 1.6.2 and later officially integrating it. Supported environments include Kubernetes, containerd, CRI-O, cloud platforms, on-premises, and bare-metal clusters. DaemonSets require privileged access; node agents require ipset. The project generally supports only the current major.minor release.

Strong points and limits

Strong points

  • Open-source Kubernetes networking solution
  • Provides CNI plugin and egress control
  • Uses BGP for pod route exchange
  • Supports multiple Kubernetes deployment methods
  • Advertises service IPs for ECMP balancing

Limits

  • DaemonSet pods require privileged access
  • Node agents require ipset on every node
  • Generally supports only the current major.minor release
  • Linux and self-hosted platforms

Who it suits

It suits operators running Kubernetes on Linux, cloud, on-premises, or bare-metal infrastructure. It is relevant when pod routing, service balancing, policies, and BGP advertisement are needed together.

Verdict

Kube-router brings routing, service balancing, policies, and BGP advertisement into one Kubernetes networking project. Installation requirements and its current-release support policy should shape operational planning.
