ModeAudio

ModeAudio sells downloadable sounds and software presets for music producers and sound designers. It suits people who want individual packs in several DAW formats; the trade-off is a per-item purchase with limits on commercial use and download-link reuse.

Overview

Founded in 2013 and based in Edinburgh, ModeAudio offers loops, samples, MIDI files and synthesiser presets. Digital packs are ready to download after purchase, and free taster packs let prospective buyers hear royalty-free sounds before committing to a pack.

The featured 50 Ambient Instrumental Loops Mini Pack 0035 costs $13.23, paid once for 50 music loops in a 249.9MB unzipped download. It is a discrete purchase rather than a subscription allowance, which suits buyers who know what they need but offers less ongoing access than a library plan.

Key features

Pack formats and contents

The featured pack includes drum samples, sampler patches, channel strip settings and MIDI loops. Its format options include WAV, Acid WAV, AIFF/Apple Loops, REX2, Ableton Live Pack, Reason ReFill, Logic Pack, FL Studio Pack and MIDI. ModeAudio says the WAV loops work with all major DAWs and software; the additional formats are useful for workflows built around particular applications. The pack includes 48 samples and vocal content as well as MIDI.

Licensing and delivery

Purchased packs are royalty-free for original music, film, television and multimedia projects, but sounds cannot be used unchanged and in isolation for commercial purposes. That works for producers incorporating sounds into a larger composition, not buyers seeking standalone commercial audio assets. Packs are digital, with purchase links usable up to three times, so buyers should keep their files after downloading rather than rely on repeated access to the link.

Plugins and compatibility

ModeAudio offers a free 15-day plugin trial with unrestricted use during the trial. A purchased plugin license can be installed on up to three computers at once, a practical allowance for someone working across a studio and personal machine. The company also lists collaborations and content for Ableton, Native Instruments, Image-Line/FL Studio, Bitwig, Reason Studios and Elektron. Its stated platforms are Android, iOS, macOS and Windows.

Pricing

ModeAudio uses a paid model and offers a free plan, free samples and a free trial. The 15-day trial applies to its audio plugins, while free taster packs let visitors try sounds before buying. The featured sample pack is $13.23, paid once; there is no ongoing download quota attached to that purchase, but the download link is limited to three uses. The paid pack license also requires sounds to be transformed or incorporated into an original project for commercial use.

Platforms

ModeAudio lists Android, iOS, macOS and Windows. Its featured WAV loops are described as compatible with all major DAWs and software, and the pack's format choices include dedicated options for Ableton Live, Reason, Logic and FL Studio.

Who it's for

ModeAudio is a good fit for producers and sound designers who want downloadable loops, samples, MIDI and presets, particularly those who need multiple DAW formats or plan to use sounds in original music and media projects. It is a weaker fit for anyone who needs a recurring pool of downloads, standalone commercial sound assets, or purchase links that remain reusable indefinitely.

Pros and cons

Pros: The featured pack offers multiple DAW-oriented formats, MIDI and varied sound components, making it adaptable across production workflows.

Pros: Free taster packs and a 15-day unrestricted plugin trial provide ways to evaluate sounds and plugins before buying.

Pros: Purchased plugins allow installation on up to three computers at once.

Cons: Commercial use excludes sounds used unchanged and in isolation, so the license does not suit standalone asset resale or use.

Cons: Each purchase download link works only three times, making local file storage important.

Cons: The featured pack is a one-time item purchase rather than a continuing download subscription.

Alternatives

Music Sample Libraries is a useful category to browse when comparing a wider range of sample-library options.

Choose BandLab Sounds if a free weekly allowance or subscription access better fits your workflow: its free plan allows 20 claims per week, while BandLab Pro costs $14.99 a month after a billed 3-day free trial and renews automatically. It runs on Android, iOS and web, rather than ModeAudio's listed desktop platforms.

Wave Alchemy is worth considering for its free Triaz Player, which includes 4,000 samples and 200 presets on macOS and Windows, though sequencer editing, sound browsing and loading your own samples are disabled in that tier.

For a recurring sound library with mobile and desktop coverage, Splice Sounds offers a Creator first month at $4.99 a month, with about 200 monthly downloads; it has Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows support, but no free plan.

Noiiz offers monthly sound allowances instead of per-pack purchases: Light costs $7.99 a month for 100 MB of sounds, while Regular costs $12.99 a month for 300 MB, unlimited Expansions and Connect PRO.

WAVS may suit someone wanting an inexpensive entry offer: its $1 first-week offer includes 10 download credits and unlimited plays, then renews monthly at the Pro plan price shown on its page.

Loopcloud offers points and cloud storage on monthly plans; its Artist plan costs $7.99 a month for 100 points and 5 GB, with a 14-day free trial.

ProjectSAM is a better direction for orchestral library buyers: its free The Free Orchestra includes 14 instruments and 1.8 GB for Kontakt Player, while Lineage Strings is a $349, paid once Kontakt library.

Zenhiser is another option for individual sample packs.

Verdict

Choose ModeAudio if you want a specific downloadable pack, multiple format options and a royalty-free license for sounds incorporated into original projects. Its free tasters and plugin trial lower the risk of exploring the catalog, but the three-use download links and restriction on unchanged, isolated commercial use are real constraints. Look elsewhere if you need an ongoing download quota or standalone commercial sound assets.
