Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Object Storage
oracle.com
What it is
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Object Storage stores and retrieves unstructured data, including analytics data, images, and videos. This regional service is accessed over the internet through Oracle Console, CLI, API, or SDK. Storage tiers include Standard, Infrequent Access, and Archive; Archive objects must be restored before reading, and the first byte can take up to an hour to retrieve. Objects can be replicated between buckets, versioned for recovery, and protected with retention dates or legal holds. Data is encrypted by default, with customer-provided keys, Vault keys, and client-side encryption also supported. Permissions can be set at object, bucket, and compartment levels through OCI Identity and Access Management. Oracle states that buckets can hold unlimited objects and an object can be up to 10 TiB. Infrequent Access is $0.01 a month per gigabyte of storage capacity, with retrieval at $0.01 per gigabyte retrieved per month and a 31-day minimum retention. The service is Always Free eligible; the Oracle Cloud Free Tier includes a US$300 credit for up to 30 days on eligible services.

Strong points and limits
Strong points
- Objects can be versioned and replicated between buckets
- Default encryption with additional key options
- IAM permissions can apply at three levels
- Buckets can contain unlimited objects
Limits
- Archive objects need restoration before reading
- S3 API support does not guarantee feature parity
- Infrequent Access has a 31-day minimum retention
- Retrieval charges apply to Infrequent Access
Who it suits
It suits organizations storing unstructured data that need tiered storage, access controls, and recovery protections. Users considering Archive should account for the restoration step before objects can be read.
Verdict
OCI Object Storage offers multiple tiers and controls for protecting and retrieving stored objects. Compare access patterns and retrieval conditions across tiers, especially before choosing Archive or Infrequent Access.
