Alternatives to OtoTheory

{"intro": "OtoTheory combines chord progression building with theory guidance for guitar, bass, keyboard, songwriting, composition, and DAW work. Its iOS app can detect chords, keys, and sections from imported audio or recorded guitar and piano. You can paste progressions from ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini for Roman numeral analysis, use 19 groove patterns and more than 50 presets, and receive suggestions shaped by feel, theory, and emotion. Pro exports MIDI with BPM, section markers, and chord names, while sketches can sync through iCloud. The web version has fewer grooves and presets, and Pro works only on iOS.\n\nAlternatives make sense when you need Android or desktop access, notation and harmony education, real-time MIDI-keyboard recognition, dedicated reverse chord lookup, or more practice and collaboration features. OtoTheory’s free iOS plan allows three local sketch saves and excludes MIDI and audio export. Paid access starts at $5.99 per month; annual Pro costs $49.99 per year, and Lifetime costs $99.99 once. Compare input methods, supported instruments, theory depth, exports, platform coverage, synchronization, and the plan structure that fits your work.", "rows": [{"ref": "sw:chordu", "name": "ChordU", "best_for": "YouTube chord searches, sheet music, and multi-instrument diagrams", "pricing": "Free plan", "key_difference": "ChordU adds YouTube searching, multiple chord versions, sheet music, MusicOnly controls, and website downloads.", "choose_when": "Choose it for Android access, YouTube lookup, ukulele or mandolin diagrams, or downloadable PDF, MIDI, and WAV files."}, {"ref": "sw:harmonybuilder", "name": "HarmonyBuilder", "best_for": "Four-part harmony writing and classroom collaboration", "pricing": "From $14 · 28-day trial", "key_difference": "HarmonyBuilder focuses on four-part notation, voice-leading education, harmony tools, and institutional assignment sharing rather than audio analysis.", "choose_when": "Choose it when desktop notation, voice-leading checks, melody harmonization, or teacher-student composition sharing matters more than OtoTheory’s audio features."}, {"ref": "sw:chordio", "name": "Chordio", "best_for": "Theory work with MIDI keyboards and structured lessons", "pricing": "Free plan · paid from $14.99", "key_difference": "Chordio adds workspaces, more than 40 scales, real-time MIDI-keyboard recognition, Harmony Explorer, lessons, and two-way DAW MIDI workflows.", "choose_when": "Choose it for Mac or iPad composition, live keyboard chord naming, sheet-music practice, or reharmonizing MIDI inside supported DAWs."}, {"ref": "sw:harmony-pro", "name": "Harmony Pro", "best_for": "Free desktop harmonic exploration and plugin workflows", "pricing": "Free plan", "key_difference": "Harmony Pro is free on desktop and web, offers adjustable suggestion profiles and controls, and ships AU and VST3 plugins without generative AI.", "choose_when": "Choose it when desktop plugins, Ableton Live support, or detailed control over harmonic suggestions outweighs OtoTheory’s audio analysis and AI suggestions."}, {"ref": "sw:reverse-chord-finder-pro", "name": "Reverse Chord Finder Pro", "best_for": "Identifying chords from selected notes", "pricing": "7-day trial", "key_difference": "Reverse Chord Finder Pro identifies chords from two or more notes, including partial matches, across piano, strings, and notation.", "choose_when": "Choose it for precise reverse lookup, more than 100 chord types, arpeggio playback, favorites, or configurable string layouts and capos."}, {"ref": "sw:tonaly", "name": "Tonaly", "best_for": "Songwriting practice, scales, and collaborative sharing", "pricing": "Free plan", "key_difference": "Tonaly centers on the circle of fifths, practice routines, borrowed chords, MIDI and PDF sharing, and cross-device iCloud work.", "choose_when": "Choose it for structured scale, progression, or solo practice, song-link collaboration, or Mac features such as MIDI drag and drop and lead sheets."}, {"ref": "sw:autochords", "name": "Autochords", "best_for": "Simple progression ideas for guitar, piano, and ukulele", "pricing": "Free plan", "key_difference": "Autochords offers style-and-key progression suggestions with section alternatives, instrument playback, diagrams, and PRO custom workflows.", "choose_when": "Choose it for quick songwriter-friendly progressions, ukulele support, built-in western-style libraries, or MIDI sharing to Logic or GarageBand."}]}
