StoneFly Migrate
stonefly.com
What it is
StoneFly Migrate transfers unstructured NFS and CIFS/SMB data volumes over LAN or WAN. It supports scheduled migration jobs and real-time replication for those volumes, with a centralized console for managing jobs and monitoring resource consumption. Files are divided into smaller data sets, transferred in parallel and recombined at the destination. Hash checks verify individual shards; if one is corrupted, that shard can be retransferred rather than sending the whole file again. The software also analyzes CPU, memory and network resources and dynamically assigns them to processes.
StoneFly presents it for moving NAS volumes to new appliances, maintenance moves, offloading infrequently accessed data to capacity tiers and syncing critical volumes. The software is free, with no data-transfer limit, but technical support and professional services are sold separately. It is delivered as an OVA virtual machine and is compatible with VMware; the FAQ also lists VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, Citrix and XenServer for virtual NAS deployments. For physical NAS to virtual NAS transfers, both appliances must be on the same subnet. File transfers can be encrypted.

Plans and prices
Strong points and limits
Strong points
- Supports scheduled jobs and real-time replication
- Retransmits corrupted shards individually
- No data-transfer limit
- Central console monitors resource consumption
- File transfers can be encrypted
Limits
- Technical support is sold separately
- Physical-to-virtual transfers require the same subnet
- Delivered as an OVA virtual machine
Who it suits
It suits teams moving or replicating NFS or CIFS/SMB volumes between NAS environments. Teams using physical-to-virtual NAS transfers need both appliances on the same subnet.
Verdict
StoneFly Migrate offers free file-volume migration with scheduled and real-time workflows, shard-level integrity checks and no stated transfer cap. Support and professional services cost extra, and physical-to-virtual NAS moves have a subnet constraint.
