Overview

Point85 calculates overall equipment effectiveness from availability, performance rate and quality rate, using a nine-category time-loss model. It can also collect equipment data for general-purpose acquisition. Rather than concentrating work in one application, the suite separates configuration, collection, monitoring and operator event entry.

Designer defines equipment, sources, work schedules, availability reasons, materials, units of measure and event-resolution scripts. Collector runs as a Windows service or Unix daemon, storing equipment events in a relational database for OEE, MTBF and MTTR calculations. Monitor brings together equipment metrics, Collector status and notifications, event timelines, trends, time-loss charts and Pareto charts. This division gives different roles focused tools, but requires an owner for the overall setup.

The OEE applications are open-source projects hosted on GitHub; the OEE-Designer repository identifies its license as MIT. Point 85 also maintains open-source projects for operator and mobile applications, units of measure and work schedules.

Key features

OEE and loss analysis: Availability, performance and quality tracking underpin OEE calculations, with downtime and quality tracking and a nine-category loss model. An optional work schedule can shape the calculation, giving teams a way to align measures with planned operating time.
Broad data collection: Sources include OPC DA/UA, HTTP/S, RabbitMQ, JMS, MQTT, Kafka, WebSocket, email, database interface tables, file shares, Modbus, cron jobs and GE Proficy Historian. That range can accommodate varied equipment and systems, though it also makes source configuration a central implementation task.
Operator event entry: Apps support chronological entry or summarized entry over a period. That offers a choice between recording events in sequence and entering a period-level summary.
Monitoring and messaging: Monitor displays trends, timelines, time-loss and Pareto charts alongside collection status. Configured systems can send event data to RabbitMQ, JMS, MQTT or Kafka brokers for Monitor subscriptions.

Pricing

Point85 is free and open source, with a free plan. That is a strong fit for organizations able to supply their own deployment, database and technical ownership; there is no paid tier or seat price in the plan structure to weigh against implementation needs. Platforms

Point85 spans Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, web and self-hosted environments. Its operator applications include desktop and web versions, as well as apps for iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux and Chrome/Edge.

Deployment needs attention: the web operator application is distributed as a WAR file for a web server that supports WAR deployment, such as Tomcat. Collector runs as a Windows service or Unix daemon, and equipment events are stored in a relational database. Supported databases are Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL and HSQLDB. This flexibility helps teams match an existing infrastructure, but the web and collection components are not a single plug-and-play install.

Who it's for

Point85 is best for manufacturing teams that need OEE calculations plus configurable collection across varied sources, and have the skills to operate its separate applications and database. It is a less natural choice for organizations that want a hosted, fully managed system or do not have technical capacity for deployment and source configuration.

Pros and cons

Pros

Extensive source coverage: Industrial protocols, brokers, files, databases and historian inputs make it adaptable to mixed production environments.
Open-source and free: The free model avoids a software subscription, while the OEE-Designer repository identifies an MIT license.
Useful loss visibility: Event timelines, time-loss charts and Pareto charts complement the core availability, performance and quality measures.

Cons

Several components to own: Designer, Collector, Monitor and operator applications divide the work and call for implementation and operational coordination.
Deployment has infrastructure prerequisites: The web operator app requires a WAR-capable web server, while Collector needs a Windows or Unix host and a relational database.

Alternatives

Compare overall equipment effectiveness software if you want to consider a wider set of OEE options.

Peakboard OEE Software is worth considering if a freemium option and Windows Designer download matter; it also has a free Hub Online Starter plan and a free trial.
L2L Manufacturing Intelligence is a paid alternative for teams looking for an offering across Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows.
MachineMetrics may suit teams seeking a paid, volume-based SaaS subscription with unlimited users and machine connectivity management.
10in6 OEE Tracking is a paid alternative with pricing based on operation and selected modules.
SYMESTIC OEE Software offers a 30-day free trial with full platform access and no contractual commitment, making it a better fit for teams wanting to evaluate before paying.
Essembi is another paid option.
OpeEye is a paid alternative with a Manual plan at 399.00 INR per month, billed per machine monthly, and unlimited users.
Vorne XL is a paid option with a single-unit Productivity Appliance price of 4490.00 USD and no recurring costs.

Verdict

Choose Point85 OEE if you want a free, open-source system with broad collection options, configurable loss analysis and monitoring, and can take responsibility for the multi-part deployment. Look elsewhere if your priority is a managed, simpler-to-operate service rather than control over configuration and infrastructure.
