Overview

Rather than treating the 3DS as only a game cartridge player, 3Beans emulates its operating system as it would run on real hardware. It can boot the Home Menu and launch some games, but the project is still young and has plenty of issues. That makes it most compelling for people curious about low-level emulation who can tolerate an unfinished experience.

Setup has a substantial prerequisite: boot9.bin, boot11.bin, and nand.bin must be dumped from a physical 3DS with homebrew access. Cartridge play also requires encrypted cartridge dumps. A cartridge is optional for booting and can be selected through the File menu; an optional FAT-formatted sd.img serves as the emulated SD card. Readers without access to the required console files should look elsewhere.

Key features

Rendering and emulation

Software and hardware GPU rendering offer two graphics paths, useful for users exploring how the emulator handles rendering. The CPUs remain fully interpreted, and the project’s limited current support means these options do not make it a broad-compatibility solution.

Controls and participation

Controls can be viewed and changed in Settings, giving users a way to adjust input. The maker invites testing, issue reports, and feedback, with a Discord server for discussion. The project is personal, however, and pull requests will not be reviewed or accepted; contributors should treat feedback, rather than code contributions, as the supported route to participate.

Pricing

3Beans: 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is the whole offer: the emulator is open source under GPL-3.0, with no paid tier described. Its practical cost is access to the required system files, which must come from a physical 3DS with homebrew access, plus encrypted cartridge dumps for game loading.

Platforms

The project supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, and the maker lists builds for all three. Latest builds are automatically provided through GitHub Actions on the releases page. Although the broader platform listing includes Android and iOS, the supported build platforms are desktop systems.

Who it's for

Choose 3Beans if you have the required 3DS files and want to follow or evaluate an early low-level emulator. Its system-software focus and rendering options make it interesting to technically curious users. Skip it if you need mature game compatibility, or cannot supply the console dumps.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and GPL-3.0 licensed, with software and hardware GPU rendering and editable controls.
Pros: Runs the 3DS operating system and can boot the Home Menu, giving experimentation a broader system focus than cartridge-only play.
Cons: Support remains early, with only some games launching and plenty of issues.
Cons: Required system dumps from a homebrew-enabled physical 3DS and encrypted cartridge dumps make setup dependent on hardware and user-supplied files.
Cons: Fully interpreted CPUs and a no-pull-request policy limit the appeal for users seeking performance maturity or a direct code-contribution path.

Alternatives

For a broader set of platform options or a more established free DS-focused option, consider SkyEmu; its stable builds are free, though DS emulation is beta quality. If you specifically want Nintendo DS and DS Lite emulation on desktop, DeSmuME is free and does not support DSi. melonDS is another free desktop Nintendo DS emulator, with console BIOS and firmware dumps required for some emulation.

For a free open-source emulator under GPLv2, GB Enhanced+ is an alternative. Pilas-melonDS is a web-based option. dasShiny is another free desktop option. On Apple platforms, Delta offers a free app with in-app purchases. DSperate is a free Linux option.

Browse Nintendo 3DS Emulators for more systems in this category, or Nintendo DS Emulators if DS emulation is the priority.

Verdict

3Beans is worth choosing for a technically curious user who can provide the required 3DS dumps and wants a free way to explore system-level emulation. Its strongest reason to choose it is that system focus; its main reason to look elsewhere is the early, issue-prone state and limited game support.
