Overview

3CX was founded in 2005. The maker is identified as 3CX, with Tampa, Florida, given as its headquarters; a separate product entry gives Nicosia, Cyprus, as 3CX headquarters. It is categorized under Business Phone Systems and Unified Communications Software.

The product covers the core functions expected from a business phone system: an automated attendant for incoming calls, advanced call routing, voicemail transcription, and applications for desktop and mobile use. That makes it a practical fit for teams that want one calling service usable from office computers and phones rather than a desk-phone-only setup.

Key features

Call handling

The auto attendant gives organizations a way to direct inbound callers without a person answering every call. Advanced call routing is particularly relevant when calls need more than a basic ring group. Voicemail transcription can turn messages into readable text, reducing the need to listen through every voicemail and helping staff triage messages when they are away from a phone.

Applications and capacity

Desktop and mobile apps extend the service beyond a fixed workstation, which is useful for distributed staff and people who alternate between office and mobile work. The general product facts include 40 users, while the free plan specifies 10 users; the plan limit is therefore the more relevant figure when assessing the no-cost option. Basic raises capacity to 40 extensions, but only doubles simultaneous-call capacity from four to eight.

Pricing

3CX uses a freemium model. Its paid pricing is stated as starting at $300 per year, but the plans differ materially in capacity and features.

Plan	Price	What it includes	Best fit
4SC Basic Free	Free	10 users; four simultaneous calls	Small teams validating a phone system or operating at modest call volume
Basic	300.00 USD per year, billed annually	40 extensions; eight simultaneous calls	Organizations that have outgrown the free tier's user and call limits
Pro	Custom pricing	Advanced call routing; contact center capabilities	Teams needing contact-center functions and more sophisticated routing
AI	Custom pricing	AI features; call center and transcription capabilities	Organizations specifically seeking AI-enabled call-center and transcription functions

The free plan is not simply an open-ended subscription: its license must be manually renewed each year. It also caps the deployment at 10 users and four simultaneous calls, so it is better for a small operation than for a busy support line. Basic costs $300 annually and is billed annually, providing four times the free plan's extensions and twice its concurrent calls, but it remains limited to eight simultaneous calls. Pro and AI require a custom quote, so their suitability depends on the resulting commercial terms rather than a published entry price.

Platforms

3CX supports web, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and macOS. This is a broad mix for organizations with varied hardware or a combination of desktop and mobile staff. Cross-platform coverage is a clear advantage over services tied to one operating system, while the web option gives users another way to access the system without relying solely on a native client.

Who it's for

Choose 3CX when a small business wants to start without a license fee, needs an attendant and structured call routing, and expects staff to answer from computers and mobile devices. Basic is the logical step for a team approaching 40 extensions or needing more than four concurrent calls. Pro is more appropriate when contact-center capabilities matter, and AI is aimed at buyers whose priority is AI-assisted call-center and transcription functionality.

It is less suitable when predictable pricing is essential for advanced tiers, when a free deployment must support more than 10 users or four simultaneous calls, or when eight concurrent calls will not cover the expected traffic. The annual manual renewal on the free license also creates an administrative task that should not be overlooked.

Pros and cons

Pros

Useful free starting point: Ten users and four simultaneous calls allow a small team to deploy without a subscription charge.
Broad platform coverage: Web, Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS and Android support accommodates mixed-device workplaces.
Strong core call handling: An auto attendant, advanced routing and voicemail transcription cover important operational needs.
Clear upgrade path: Basic expands to 40 extensions and eight simultaneous calls, while higher tiers add contact-center and AI capabilities.

Cons

Free-tier limits: Ten users and four simultaneous calls can constrain a growing or high-volume team.
Basic still has a call ceiling: Eight simultaneous calls may be insufficient for busier support operations.
Advanced pricing is custom: Pro and AI cannot be budgeted from a published price.
Manual annual renewal: The free license must be renewed each year, creating a risk of avoidable interruption if neglected.

Alternatives

Microsoft Teams is the better choice when free group meetings for up to 100 participants, 60-minute limits and 5 GB of cloud storage are more important than 3CX's phone-system orientation.

Vodia PBX suits buyers seeking a paid, prepaid single-tenant PBX with bundles ranging from five to 1,000 user extensions.

VitalPBX is worth considering for a free community deployment offering 12 extensions and two VitXi WebRTC clients.

Talkroute is an alternative for buyers who prefer a paid service with a free trial and small plans built around users, phone numbers, mailboxes and text-message quotas.

Zoom Phone is the clearer fit when a paid service with metered calling from $10.00 USD per user per month is preferred.

PortSIP PBX provides another freemium PBX option, including a free edition capped at two simultaneous calls and three extensions.

Dialpad Connect is an alternative paid service with calling, messaging, meetings and one local virtual number per user on its Standard plan.

Yeastar P-Series Cloud Edition is another paid cloud phone-system option with a free trial.

Verdict

3CX is a strong choice for small and mid-sized organizations that value cross-platform apps, capable call handling and a no-cost entry tier. Choose it for the combination of an auto attendant, advanced routing, transcription and a clear Basic upgrade. Look elsewhere if your operation needs higher concurrent-call capacity immediately or requires advanced-tier pricing to be known before purchase.
