Overview

SRTGen is a web and API service for turning audio and video into editable subtitles, translations, and dubbed versions. It is most compelling for creators and localization teams that want those steps together; the free allowance is small, and introductory paid prices rise after two months.

Key features

Upload a video or audio file to create time-coded transcripts, review captions, then translate, style, burn in, or export them. Downloads include SRT, VTT, ASS, and TXT, with JSON through agent localization. Speaker identification and brand caption presets help teams prepare captions for different voices and publishing contexts. SRTGen supports YouTube, TikTok, Reels, Shorts, podcasts, courses, marketing videos, and news.

Translation spans 100 languages, while dubbing and voice cloning extend the workflow beyond subtitles. Voice-clone slots grow from 3 on Free to 100 on Business. SRTGen names OpenAI, Cartesia, and ElevenLabs for synthetic voices. This breadth is useful when one project needs multiple language versions and formats, but it is unnecessary overhead for readers who only need to edit a subtitle file.

MCP integrations connect SRTGen with Codex, Claude, Gemini, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Windsurf. Agent localization supports uploads up to 20 GiB and five export formats; the service also offers a REST API, with full developer API access on higher plans. For videos over 200 MB, its recommended agent workflow extracts a compact MP3 locally, leaving the original video on the user's computer for final rendering.

Workspace features include email invitations, admin, editor, and viewer roles, shared style templates, pooled credits, unified billing, and real-time project synchronization. Security controls include TLS/HTTPS in transit, encrypted storage for sensitive credentials, role-based access, hashed API-key storage, short-lived signed sessions, rate limiting, and periodic reviews. Uploaded files go to Backblaze B2; audio processing may involve AssemblyAI, Google Gemini, ElevenLabs, and Cartesia. Deleted project files are queued for removal within 30 days, account deletion schedules permanent file deletion within 90 days, and AI processing logs may remain for up to two years.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 20 signup credits, 20 transcription minutes, 40 translation minutes, up to 4k speech characters, 2 GB storage, and one seat. It also includes SRT, VTT, and TXT exports, but recording stops at five minutes and is limited to 720p. Those caps make it a trial of the workflow, not a realistic allowance for regular production.

Starter is $4 per month for the first two months, then $8 per month. Its 360 monthly credits, 360 transcription minutes, 720 translation minutes, 20 GB storage, 10 voice-clone slots, and single seat suit an individual social-video creator. It offers a clear step up from Free, though the renewal price matters for anyone budgeting beyond the introductory period.

Pro is $14 per month for the first two months, then $24 per month. With 1,500 credits, 1,500 transcription minutes, 3,000 translation minutes, 100 GB storage, 30 voice-clone slots, and three seats, it fits a small localization team. Additional seats cost $3.00 per month. Business is $49 per month for the first two months, then $69 per month; its 5,000 credits, 5,000 transcription minutes, 10,000 translation minutes, 500 GB storage, 100 voice-clone slots, and 10 seats target higher-volume brand work. Extra seats also cost $3.00 per month.

Plans offer monthly billing, yearly billing with a stated 25% saving, and non-expiring top-ups. Overage credits cost 1.00 USD per once per 20 Credits, useful when a plan's allowance runs out without stepping up a tier. Enterprise has custom pricing for bulk processing, automation pipelines, and dedicated agency services.

Platforms

SRTGen runs on the web and through an API. Its support resources include a FAQ center, documentation, contact option, and feedback link.

Who it's for

Choose SRTGen if transcription, translation, voice dubbing, caption styling, and export need to sit in one workflow, especially for recurring multilingual publishing or team localization. It is a poorer fit for occasional subtitle editing: Free's recording and usage ceilings are restrictive, and paid plans become more expensive after their first two months.

Pros and cons

Pro: One workflow covers transcription, translation across 100 languages, dubbing, review, styling, and multiple subtitle exports, reducing the need to split localization across separate tools.
Pro: MCP connections, a REST API, and shared team workspaces give technical users and small teams ways to integrate or coordinate work.
Con: Free users face limited credits and minutes, a five-minute, 720p recording ceiling, and one seat.
Con: Starter, Pro, and Business all rise in price after two months, so the introductory figure understates ongoing cost.
Con: File deletion can take up to 30 days for projects or 90 days after account deletion, while AI processing logs may be retained for up to two years.

Alternatives

Editsub is worth considering for a free starting tier across Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, or a yearly Pro plan. Choose Jubler if you want a free desktop subtitle editor for Linux, macOS, or Windows and can work with VLC required for preview and waveform. Subtitle Edit is another free, open-source option for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

VideoLocalize offers a free tier and trial on web and API, while EZTitles is a Windows option with a free trial and paid plans. Aegisub is a free, open-source desktop subtitle editor for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Checksub is a paid web, API, and extension option with a free plan and trial. Subvideo.ai offers web-based guest and free-account tiers.

Verdict

SRTGen is a strong fit for creators and localization teams that need transcription, translation, dubbing, and subtitle delivery under one roof, with API and agent connections for more technical workflows. Its main drawback is the combination of tight free limits and a substantial price increase after the first two months; readers who need only basic subtitle editing should look elsewhere.
