Overview

Lingvo combines reference material with lookup and vocabulary-learning tools. Windows can translate words under the cursor in pictures, web pages and subtitles, while Lingvo Tutor provides exercises on word meanings and spelling. Those features suit sustained reading and study better than occasional word checks, but the broadest reference collection comes with the paid Windows editions.

Key features

The Windows multilingual version covers 10 languages. Its Professional edition includes more than 80 general, explanatory and specialist dictionaries, covering fields such as law, economics, finance, engineering, oil and gas, chemistry, medicine and biology. That depth is useful for technical or professional reading where a general definition may not be enough; it is likely excessive for someone who only needs everyday translations.

On macOS, lookup works through Services or keyboard shortcuts, with cursor translation in Safari. The iOS app translates photographed text and synchronizes user-created vocabulary cards across devices. Android adds photo and video translation and grammatical word forms. Both mobile apps say all functions are available offline, a practical advantage for travel or study without a connection.

The mobile apps include five basic free dictionaries spanning English, German, French, Spanish, Latin and Russian, with additional dictionaries available for purchase. Audio pronunciation and usage examples support understanding beyond a bare translation.

Pricing

Lingvo uses a freemium model. Lingvo для iOS and Lingvo для Android are each free and include five basic dictionaries across six languages; additional dictionaries are purchased separately. These are sensible entry points for occasional mobile lookup, but they are not equivalent to the larger Windows collections.

Windows x6 offers a 15-day trial with full program access from first launch. The English Professional Per Seat edition costs 4018.00 RUB per once for a three-year license, with 3–20 licenses; it covers English and Russian and suits a small team needing the professional English collection. The Multilingual Home edition costs 8349.00 RUB per once for a three-year license and covers 10 languages, making it the more restrained choice for home use. The Multilingual Professional edition costs 13965.00 RUB per once for a three-year license and adds more than 80 dictionaries; its broader specialist content is the reason to pay the premium. All three Windows prices are one-time charges for three-year licenses, not perpetual terms.

Platforms

Lingvo runs on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Windows requirements include Windows 11, 10, 8.1 and 8, as well as Windows Server 2019, 2016 and 2012 R2. The desktop tools are particularly useful for reading on a computer, while mobile offline functions favor reference on the move. Technical support is available to registered users of licensed versions Monday through Friday, 09:00–18:00 Moscow time.

Who it's for

Choose Lingvo if your work or study calls for multilingual or specialist dictionary coverage, contextual desktop lookup, or offline mobile reference. The paid Windows editions make most sense for readers who will use the wider collections; the free mobile apps suit lighter needs. It is less compelling if you only want a free online dictionary or do not need its dedicated desktop and offline capabilities.

Pros and cons

Pros: The Professional Windows collection combines more than 80 dictionaries across general and specialist subjects, useful for technical reading.
Pros: Cursor translation on Windows and Safari reduces interruption when reading on a desktop.
Pros: Mobile offline access, photo translation and vocabulary-card synchronization support study away from a connection.
Cons: The free mobile tier is limited to five basic dictionaries, with additional dictionaries sold separately.
Cons: Windows licenses run for three years, so the one-time prices do not buy perpetual use.

Alternatives

Online Dictionaries is a useful starting point if you want to compare more browser-based reference options. Choose Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries instead for free online access to the full A–Z Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary and Oxford Advanced American Dictionary, plus a Text Checker and word lists. WordWeb offers a free Windows version with definitions, synonyms, examples, basic AI suggestions and translations, so it may suit a reader seeking a broad free desktop vocabulary tool rather than Lingvo’s paid collections. dict.cc is a straightforward choice for free browser dictionary use, including private and business use.

GoldenDict is worth considering if you prefer free, open-source dictionary software and are comfortable downloading dictionary content separately. Merriam-Webster Dictionary offers a free ad-supported app with an offline dictionary and thesaurus; its premium version removes ads. PONS Dictionary provides free ad-supported online use, with in-app purchases for its translation app’s dictionaries and ad-related options. The Free Dictionary is a free online reference option with dictionaries, thesaurus, encyclopedias and translations. Linguee is free for private and business use if you want a free dictionary alternative across web and mobile.

Verdict

Lingvo is a good choice for language learners and specialists who will use its extensive paid Windows dictionaries, desktop cursor lookup or offline mobile tools. Its chief advantage is the combination of specialist depth and practical lookup features; look elsewhere if you need only a free, general-purpose dictionary or want a Windows license without a three-year term.
