Overview

ABCD is a collection-management system for libraries, archives and museums that need cataloguing alongside lending, purchasing and public access. It suits institutions with the capacity to configure an on-premise system; its strongest case is breadth without a licence fee, while that flexibility may be more than a small school library needs.

Key features

Cataloguing and database design

ABCD supports MARC, ISAD-G, Dublin Core and custom database models. Its Central module lets institutions shape database structures, input screens, validation, pick-lists and display, export and print formats. That adaptability is useful when a collection does not fit a standard catalogue, but makes ABCD a better fit for organisations able to make decisions about their own data structure than for those seeking a fixed, ready-made workflow.

Central can copy records from Z39.50-capable catalogues and map MARC fields into custom fields. The feature set also includes managing Z39.50 searches and remote retrieval, plus OAI metadata harvesting. These capabilities matter to institutions exchanging or gathering records across systems; they are less of a differentiator for a collection that is built and maintained entirely in-house.

Public access and lending

The OPAC can provide a searchable public catalogue, while circulation supports lending items to users and is highly customisable. ABCD also includes a borrower portal. Together, these functions make it possible to pair staff-side collection work with public discovery and borrowing, though the emphasis on configurability favours institutions prepared to tailor the setup to their processes.

Purchasing and administration

The acquisitions module covers purchase suggestions, quotations and purchasing decisions, giving collection managers a workflow for procurement as well as cataloguing. Custom reporting is supported. In release 3.3.0, image and document display checks login permissions and uses path checks to prevent access beyond allowed directories. The same release's Backup Manager requires the server's PHP zip extension, a deployment dependency to account for when planning backups.

Pricing

ABCD is free software. The ABCD plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is described as free software for libraries and documentation centres. There is no paid tier or seat or record cap stated in the plan; the trade-off is that this is on-premise software, so the institution is responsible for operating its deployment rather than buying a managed service. The backup tool's PHP zip requirement is one practical server consideration.

Platforms

ABCD is listed for Linux, Windows and the web, and its repository says it is supported on Windows and Linux. Deployment is on-premise, so the web platform designation should not be read as a hosted service: the institution runs the system in its own environment.

Who it's for

ABCD is best suited to libraries, archives and museums that want one configurable system for collection records, lending, procurement and a public catalogue. Its support for multiple descriptive standards and custom models is particularly useful where collections have varied or specialised metadata needs. Institutions wanting a turnkey hosted product, or a narrowly focused school-library system, may prefer a more purpose-built option.

The project describes an ISIS email list for general and ABCD questions, with possible replies in Spanish, English or French. It also invites community contributions through testing, documentation, translation, financial support and GitHub feature or bug requests. This can suit organisations comfortable engaging with a community project, but does not amount to a stated managed support service.

Pros and cons

Broad collection coverage: cataloguing, circulation, acquisitions and a searchable OPAC address several institutional workflows in one system.
Flexible records: standards support and configurable database tools accommodate collections that do not fit a single catalogue model.
Useful exchange tools: Z39.50 import and retrieval plus OAI harvesting support bringing in external records and metadata.
Operational responsibility: on-premise deployment means the institution must run its own environment, including meeting the Backup Manager's PHP zip dependency.
Community-oriented support: the project points users to an email list and contribution channels rather than describing a dedicated support package.

Alternatives

Koha is another free option if a library wants open-source software with Linux, self-hosted and web platform support. Lyra is a paid school-library alternative for readers who prefer a web service with published annual tiers: 795.00 USD per year for up to 150 patrons or 1495.00 USD per year for up to 400, both with all features included.

Surpass suits K-12 libraries comparing paid cloud plans with stated volume and student limits: its Small Library plan is 960.00 USD per year for up to 5,000 volumes and 1,000 students, while Large Library is 1440.00 USD per year. Atriuum is another option to consider for its Android, iOS and web platform support.

Librarika may suit a smaller collection looking for a freemium web service: its free Basic plan covers 2,000 records, unlimited patrons, staff and check-outs, OPAC and email reminders. Accessit Library is an alternative for organisations seeking a paid library system with organisation-specific requirements.

Artemis is a paid, web-based school-library alternative with individually quoted annual pricing; Sonet Examination Management System is another web-based option.

Verdict

Choose ABCD if your library, archive or museum needs a free, on-premise system that can adapt its record model while handling lending, acquisitions and public catalogue access. Its breadth and metadata flexibility are compelling for institutions able to manage configuration and deployment. Look elsewhere if you want a hosted, turnkey service or a school-library product with clearly bounded patron-based plans.
