Overview

BOMIST links component stock to BOM revisions, procurement, production, and sales orders. Teams can track parts across storage locations, compare BOM versions, estimate batch costs, and identify shortages before a build. This makes it a more natural fit for hardware operations than a basic inventory ledger, though buyers looking for broad ERP functionality may prefer a different category of product.

Purchase lists can be created when builds need stock and consolidated into supplier orders. Production reservations and kit lists help prepare work, and finishing a production run adjusts inventory. Customer and sales-order tracking extends the workflow beyond manufacturing, but the product's stated focus remains hardware and electronics.

Key features

Part records include usage, specifications, and datasheets. Octopart and distributor APIs for DigiKey, Mouser, and TME connect records with supplier pricing and availability, useful when component sourcing affects build planning. CSV bulk imports ease initial data loading; CSV, JSON, HTML, and PDF exports, barcode printing and scanning, and a local REST API provide ways to move or work with the data.

Data remains locally accessible offline, while workspaces can sync through the cloud in real time. Multiple users on different computers can work in a shared workspace, but the Free, PRO, and MAKER plans are single-user. TEAM adds role-based permissions and one Team Workspace, so it is the relevant tier for shared work.

The hybrid deployment combines local access with cloud synchronization. Enterprise customers can choose on-premises deployment and an offline license. Servers are currently in Frankfurt, Germany, and Northern California, United States, and may be moved or extended elsewhere with notice. The privacy policy names Google Analytics and Mixpanel; crash reports may also be sent automatically.

Pricing

The free plan is free and limits a single user to 100 parts and 3 products. It is a useful way for an individual to start, but those caps make it a poor fit for a growing catalog or shared operation.

PRO costs 50.00 USD per year, billed yearly, for one user with no limits. It removes the stated Free caps without adding team access. MAKER costs 180.00 USD per year, billed annually at $15.00/month, and gives one user up to 1000 parts with unlimited products. It suits a solo maker who needs room for more products but can work within the parts ceiling.

TEAM costs 175.00 USD per year, billed yearly, and includes unlimited users, one Team Workspace, and 5GB of document storage. It is the clearest fit for collaboration, though the single workspace and storage allowance matter to teams with multiple workspaces or many documents. ENTERPRISE starts at $350 per month, billed yearly, and includes on-premises deployment, an offline license, priority support, and multiple Team Workspaces. It targets organizations that need those deployment or workspace options; pricing is custom at that starting point.

A 14-day trial is available. The stated annual rates and plan limits are important to compare: the Free, PRO, and MAKER tiers are single-user, while TEAM and ENTERPRISE address shared use.

Platforms

BOMIST supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, and Windows. Its offline local access is useful where connectivity is intermittent; cloud sync supports teams working across computers. The listed platform range does not include mobile operating systems.

Who it's for

BOMIST is strongest for electronics makers and hardware teams managing parts through sourcing and production. Solo users can start free or choose a paid plan according to catalog size; teams needing a common workspace should look to TEAM, while organizations requiring on-premises use or multiple team workspaces have ENTERPRISE. It is less compelling for users who need a broad business system rather than a hardware-focused workflow.

Pros and cons

Pro: Inventory, BOM checks, purchasing, and production adjustments connect the component record to build completion.
Pro: Offline local access alongside real-time cloud sync supports both individual work and cross-computer collaboration.
Pro: Supplier integrations and multiple export formats help connect sourcing and data handling to existing work.
Con: Free is limited to one user, 100 parts, and 3 products, so it is only suitable for a small solo catalog.
Con: TEAM includes one workspace and 5GB of document storage, which may constrain larger shared operations.
Con: The MAKER tier still caps parts at 1000, and single-user PRO does not provide team access.

Alternatives

Bill of Materials Software is a useful starting point for comparing BOM-focused tools. Consider OpenBOM if its free plan's allowance of up to 2,000 records better matches your needs. Cascadia PLM offers a self-hosted core plan with unlimited editors and viewers under AGPL-3.0, making it worth considering when that PLM approach fits. Dolibarr is a free open-source ERP and CRM for on-premise use or third-party hosted SaaS. NETVIBES is another option to compare. Dokuly offers a free, open-source PLM as a self-hosted Docker stack. PartsBox has a free personal-project plan for one user and one currency. Global Shop Solutions ERP may suit readers seeking an ERP with pricing tailored to their company. Carbon is an alternative whose Community edition includes core ERP, MRP, MES, and QMS under AGPL-3.0, with enterprise features requiring a commercial agreement.

Verdict

Choose BOMIST if your hardware operation needs component inventory, BOM control, purchasing, and production in one workflow, especially if offline access matters. Its free plan is tightly limited and solo-only, so teams should budget for TEAM; look elsewhere if your priority is broader ERP scope or a larger shared workspace without the stated storage constraint.
