In their own words

Adobe Digital Editions

Adobe Digital Editions is a free eBook reader for downloading, purchasing, borrowing, organizing and reading digital publications online or offline. It supports EPUB, EPUB 3 and PDF on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Readers can search book text, mark passages with highlights, bookmarks and annotations, and arrange shelves by title, author or publisher. EPUB 3 adds audio and video rendering, right-to-left reading, interactive quizzes and improved assistive technology support. The app can borrow public-library eBooks, including titles protected through Adobe Content Server DRM. Books obtained on one device can be downloaded to other devices activated with the same ID. Protected eBooks can use an Adobe ID or an alternate vendor or bookseller ID; an Adobe ID is not mandatory. Accessibility support includes keyboard controls, text enlargement and high-contrast modes, as well as named screen readers on Windows and VoiceOver on Mac. One Adobe ID can activate up to six devices. Its PDF reader is optimized for onscreen readability, though some enterprise PDF features are unsupported and may display incorrectly.

MapleRead

MapleRead is an iOS e-book reader family with CX, CE, and SE editions. Its EPUB reader offers adjustable styles, layouts, themes, and fonts. It can generate pseudo audiobooks using narrator voices in over 40 languages and supports synchronized immersion reading. Readers can look up words, translate sentences, save vocabulary, highlight passages, and add notes. Books can be organized with sets and tags, and their metadata can be edited.

All editions read DRM-free, password-free EPUB files; SE also reads DRM-free, password-free PDFs. MapleRead works with Calibre and supports importing or transferring books through OPDS, HTML, PC Upload, iTunes, and AirDrop. Cloud sync covers reading positions, notes, vocabulary, bookmarks, and book-set membership, but not book files; synced data can be viewed in a browser on desktop or mobile. CX is free to try with limitations and in-app purchases. CE costs 6.99 USD once, SE costs 8.99 USD once, and the SE-CE bundle costs 10.49 USD once.
