Overview

Adobe Lightroom is a photo editor and organizer built around a cloud-based library. It is best suited to photographers who want to manage and edit RAW images across desktop, web and mobile; the main trade-off is matching cloud storage and generative credits to the way they work.

Key features

Lightroom combines searchable photo organization with cloud sync, batch editing and RAW support. That makes it practical for photographers working through large shoots who want their library and edits accessible across devices. Masking tools add more targeted control than broad adjustments alone.

Assisted Culling filters photos by image quality and groups similar shots, helping narrow a selection. Generative Remove uses Adobe Firefly to remove distractions, while generative upscale uses Topaz Gigapixel for up to 4x enlargement. AI Lens Blur, Adaptive Presets, portrait Quick Actions and sensor Dust Removal extend the editing toolkit; monthly generative-credit allowances vary by plan, so frequent use makes that quota a meaningful part of the choice.

Shared albums support collaboration, and users can post to social apps or share with the Lightroom community. The Lightroom plan also includes Lightroom Classic, which Adobe describes as optimized for desktop use. Lightroom for mobile is free on iOS and Android, with premium features available as an upgrade.

Pricing

Adobe offers free access through its mobile app and a 7-day trial. The trial converts to billing when it ends, with a further 14-day refund period. Paid plan prices are custom pricing.

Lightroom: 1 TB cloud storage and 250 monthly generative credits, plus Lightroom Classic. A fit for photographers focused on Lightroom’s editing and library workflow.
Photography: 1 TB storage and 1,000 monthly generative credits. It offers four times the monthly credits of Lightroom, for people who expect to use generative tools more often.
Creative Cloud Pro: 100 GB storage, 4,000 monthly generative credits and 20+ apps. Choose it for the wider app collection and higher credit allowance; its storage quota is lower than the Lightroom and Photography plans.
Creative Cloud Pro for students and teachers: 100 GB, 4,000 monthly credits and 20+ apps, for eligible students and teachers seeking the broader collection.
Lightroom for teams: 1 TB and 250 monthly credits, for team use with Lightroom’s core plan allowance.
Creative Cloud Pro for teams: 100 GB, 4,000 monthly credits and 20+ apps, for teams that need the broader app collection and higher credit allowance.

Individual licenses can be installed on multiple computers, activated on two and used on one computer at a time. Students and teachers and teams have separate plan categories.

Platforms

Lightroom supports Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows, spanning mobile, desktop and browser workflows.

Who it's for

Lightroom is a strong fit for photographers who want searchable organization, RAW editing, batch work and cloud access in one service. It is less compelling for someone seeking only a free desktop RAW developer or a simple image-processing utility, especially if cloud storage and generative features are not priorities.

Pros and cons

Pro: Searchable organization, cloud sync and editing work together, helping keep a photo library usable across device types.
Pro: RAW support, batch editing and masking cover both large selections and more controlled adjustments.
Pro: Assisted Culling and AI editing tools can speed selection and handle specific cleanup or enhancement tasks.
Con: The plans trade off storage against monthly generative credits, so the best fit depends on whether library capacity or AI usage matters more.
Con: The free mobile app does not include all premium features, and the trial begins billing after seven days unless canceled.

Alternatives

For a focused workflow or different platform needs, Evoto AI is a freemium alternative with a free plan and trial across Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows. ON1 Photo RAW is a paid option with a free trial and support for desktop and mobile platforms. For free options, RawTherapee is a desktop RAW developer without digital asset management, printing or uploading features, while darktable is an open-source photography workflow application and raw developer.

Converseen is a free choice for Linux, macOS and Windows. XnConvert offers free use for private, educational and non-profit purposes, with a company license for larger use. Fotosizer has a free Windows edition and paid licenses. GraphicsMagick is free image-processing software supporting reading, writing and manipulating more than 92 formats.

Browse batch photo processing software, RAW photo processing software, panorama stitching software, photo editing software and AI photo editors for more options by workflow.

Verdict

Choose Lightroom if you want one cloud-centered workflow for organizing, selecting and editing RAW photos across devices, with Lightroom Classic included in its Lightroom plan. Look elsewhere if you need a free desktop-only RAW developer or a simpler utility, or if the plan’s storage and generative-credit balance does not suit your workload.
