Overview

Photoshop brings detailed image editing together with compositing and graphic design. Layers, masks and precise selections help target individual parts of an image, while batch editing and RAW support serve photographers working with multiple files or camera originals. Cloud sync and access across desktop, browser and mobile can support work that moves between devices.

This breadth is valuable when a project spans retouching, design and combining images, but may be more than someone seeking only a focused set of photo adjustments needs. A seven-day trial and free mobile apps offer ways to start; premium mobile features require a subscription.

Key features

Layer editing and masking keep elements distinct and help control which areas an edit affects. Together with precise selections, they are well suited to detailed retouching and composites. Batch editing helps when changes need to be applied to multiple images, and RAW support makes Photoshop relevant to photographers working from camera files.

Generative Fill, Generative Expand and Remove Tool use Adobe Firefly models to add to, extend or remove content from images. Harmonize matches lighting, shadows and colors when placing people or objects into a background, helping integrate composite elements. Photoshop also offers Topaz Labs partner AI models for image upscaling.

The browser-based Photoshop application is included in Photoshop plans. Free standalone apps are available for iPhone and Android, with premium features available by subscription. The Plugin Marketplace includes UXP plugins such as Slack for Photoshop and Trello for Photoshop.

Pricing

Photoshop is paid software, with a seven-day trial and a free plan. Adobe offers Photoshop on its own as well as in multi-app plans, with categories for individuals, students and teachers, and businesses. The plan options have different storage and generative-credit allowances, so the right fit depends on whether Photoshop alone or a wider app collection matters more.

Photography: 1TB cloud storage. This is an option for readers comparing Photoshop plans around photography workflows; the plan price is custom pricing.
Photoshop: 100GB cloud storage and 25 monthly generative credits. The standalone choice suits someone who wants Photoshop rather than a multi-app collection; price is custom pricing.
Creative Cloud Pro: 20+ apps, 4,000 monthly generative credits and 100GB cloud storage. It suits users who need a broader app selection and higher monthly credit allowance; price is custom pricing.
Creative Cloud Pro for students and teachers: 20+ apps and 100GB cloud storage. This is the education-category multi-app option; price is custom pricing.
Photoshop for teams: 100GB cloud storage. It is the team-category Photoshop option; price is custom pricing.
Creative Cloud Pro for teams: 20+ apps and 100GB cloud storage. It is the team-category multi-app option; price is custom pricing.

The plan comparison and FAQ can help distinguish the options, but the central trade-off is clear: standalone Photoshop avoids paying for a larger app collection, while Creative Cloud Pro adds 20+ apps and, for the general plan, substantially more monthly generative credits. The Photography plan offers more cloud storage than the standalone Photoshop plan. Premium features in the otherwise free mobile apps still require a subscription.

Platforms

Photoshop runs on Android, iOS, macOS, the web and Windows. The spread is useful for users who need a browser-based option or mobile access alongside desktop work, with cloud sync supporting continuity across devices.

Who it's for

Photoshop is a strong fit for photographers and designers who need layers, masks, precise selections, RAW support and compositing in one editor. Batch editing also helps when a workflow covers multiple images, while AI tools address generation, removal, blending and upscaling. It is less compelling for people who need only a narrow editing task or want premium mobile functionality without a subscription.

Pros and cons

Pro: Layers, masking, precise selections and compositing support fine-grained edits and complex image combinations.
Pro: RAW support and batch editing make it useful for photographers working with camera files and multiple images.
Pro: Web and mobile access, plus cloud sync, extend the workflow beyond desktop platforms.
Con: Premium features in the mobile apps require a subscription, limiting the usefulness of the free apps for users who need the full mobile feature set.
Con: Photoshop is paid software; readers must weigh the subscription against whether they need its broader editing and design toolkit.

Alternatives

Adobe Lightroom is worth considering for a photography-centered workflow: it has a free plan and free trial, runs on Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows, and its Lightroom plan includes 1TB cloud storage and 250 monthly generative credits. Photoshop instead emphasizes compositing, layers and design as well as photo editing.

Photopea may suit readers who want a free editor, with a free account providing editor access. It also supports a wider range of listed platforms, including Linux and self-hosting.

Retouch4me, ON1 Photo RAW, Evoto AI, PhotoPad, HitPaw FotorPea and Airbrush are other options to compare for image editing.

Verdict

Choose Photoshop if you need one editor for precise layered work, RAW photos, batch editing and image compositing across desktop, web and mobile. Its broad toolkit and AI features are the main reason to choose it; look elsewhere if you need only focused photo adjustments or want premium mobile features without a subscription.
