Overview

ClickSend supports promotional campaigns, transactional texts such as reminders and delivery updates, and one-time-password verification. Its API can send and manage messages, check send costs and show message history. Delivery status, webhooks and two-way messaging give teams ways to track delivery and handle replies; inbound SMS replies are free.

Recurring workflows can use no-code integrations or full-code builds, so the service can fit teams with different technical resources. But businesses that rely on links in their texts should settle the URL restriction before committing: ClickSend is pausing URL-containing SMS for new customers and requires support approval.

Key features

API and developer tools: SDKs are available for PHP, Node.js, Ruby, Swift, Objective-C, Python, C#, Java, Go and Perl. Message history and send-cost checks support day-to-day management, while delivery status and webhooks help connect sending to operational systems.
Integrations and automation: Integrations include Zapier, Microsoft Power Automate, Make, GoHighLevel, ActiveCampaign, Salesforce, Bubble.io and IFTTT. This range supports teams building recurring workflows across established tools; full-code builds remain an option where integrations are not the right fit.
Two-way messaging: Customers can receive replies as well as send SMS, and inbound replies are free. That makes conversational exchanges less costly on the reply side, though carrier fees and multipart charges still affect overall spend.
Security and service commitments: ClickSend says connections use TLS 1.2 with AES ciphers and sensitive data is encrypted at rest and in transit. API keys are managed in the web portal; staff access uses role-based controls and multi-factor authentication. The SMS page advertises round-the-clock, year-round human chat support and a 99.95% uptime SLA, useful considerations for teams relying on messaging operations.

Pricing

ClickSend is a paid, pay-as-you-go service with a 14-day trial and no free plan. The tiers are presented as follows:

Boost: Free, billed pay-as-you-go, with a $20 minimum top-up and no subscription. This is the lowest entry point, suited to smaller-scale use, but requires more upfront funding than a small test may warrant.
Growth: Free, billed pay-as-you-go, with a $500 minimum top-up and 7% savings. It is aimed at higher-volume buyers able to commit more balance to access the stated discount.
Scale: Free, billed pay-as-you-go, with a $3,000 minimum top-up and 14% savings. The larger commitment makes sense only where usage can justify that balance.
Enterprise: Free, billed pay-as-you-go, with a $10,000 minimum top-up and 21% savings. It offers the greatest stated savings, but the substantial top-up makes it a poor fit for uncertain or modest volumes.

These are top-up thresholds, not a stated per-message rate. Additional carrier fees apply, and messages longer than 160 characters are charged as multiple parts, so campaign length and destination affect costs. Free inbound replies help with two-way use, but do not remove those sending charges.

Platforms

ClickSend supports API, iOS, macOS and web. Browser access suits teams managing messaging without building a dedicated API workflow, while the API and SDKs target software teams integrating SMS into applications or processes.

Who it's for

ClickSend is a strong fit for businesses sending recurring operational or promotional SMS that need API access, workflow integrations, delivery tracking or replies. Its language coverage and automation options give developers and operations teams room to choose how much to build. It is less suitable for organizations unable to meet the entry top-up, or for new customers whose SMS must include URLs before approval is secured.

Pros and cons

Pro: A broad SDK selection and named automation integrations support both custom development and no-code workflows.
Pro: Delivery status, webhooks, history and cost checks cover practical needs for monitoring and managing message flows.
Pro: Inbound replies are free, benefiting teams that need two-way SMS.
Con: The minimum top-up rises from $20 to $10,000 across tiers, making discounted rates dependent on committing increasingly large balances.
Con: Carrier fees and multipart billing mean a headline tier discount does not by itself predict total message cost.
Con: New customers need support approval for SMS containing URLs, a significant constraint for link-dependent campaigns.

Alternatives

Transactional SMS Software is a broader category to explore when comparing services for transactional messaging.

Textmagic is worth considering for teams wanting Android support and a prepaid Essential plan priced at 0.05 USD per month; its rate varies by destination country and covers 160 plain-text characters per SMS part.

Bandwidth Messaging API may suit teams focused on U.S. outbound SMS, with per-message pricing shown for 10DLC and short-code traffic.

Clickatell SMS API is an option for readers seeking a free plan alongside pay-as-you-go messaging, with outgoing message prices varying by destination and message type.

Mailchimp is a different fit for teams needing email marketing: its free plan includes 250 contacts, 500 emails per month, 250 emails per day, one audience and one seat.

Infobip SMS API is another paid API option with pay-as-you-go rates that depend on country and network, and volume discounts for large campaigns.

MoceanAPI is an alternative for teams comparing SMS APIs with destination-dependent pay-as-you-go rates or a U.S./Canada toll-free number plan.

Vonage SMS API is another usage-based API option, with pricing varying by country and number type.

Messente offers SMS, WhatsApp and Viber access with dashboard and API access, so it may suit teams seeking those channels together.

Verdict

Choose ClickSend if your business needs programmable SMS, workflow flexibility and two-way messaging backed by tracking tools. Its SDK and integration breadth is the clearest reason to choose it; the strongest reasons to look elsewhere are the minimum top-ups and URL approval hurdle for new customers.
