Overview

Ahrefs is an SEO and marketing platform for researching search demand, competitors and backlinks, then monitoring rankings and site health. It suits SEO practitioners and teams that need several of those jobs in one toolkit. Its depth comes with a catch: the free plan is narrow, and paid capacity depends sharply on the plan.

Key features

SEO research and audits

Keyword and competitor research, rank tracking, backlink analysis and Site Audit cover the core SEO workflow. Content Explorer finds web mentions and potential link prospects; AI Content Helper is aimed at improving content. The breadth is useful for teams that move between research, technical checks and content work, but the available scale is governed by project, keyword and crawl-credit allowances.

Ahrefs says its index contains 170 trillion pages, tracks 41.9 billion keywords and filters 28.7 billion keywords; AhrefsBot crawls 8 billion pages daily. Those figures indicate substantial data infrastructure, but they do not remove subscription limits on how much a customer can track or crawl.

AI, integrations and support

The platform includes AI assistants, MCP access, and connections to AI chatbots, alongside native Ahrefs and Looker Studio integrations. Ask Ahrefs is free during beta on Lite and higher plans. Multilingual customer support operates five days a week, with a median first response time of 5:58 minutes.

Pricing

Ahrefs uses a freemium model. Ahrefs Free costs 0.00 USD per free and offers site data and fixes with limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access. That is a useful starting point for a site owner checking their own property, not a substitute for broad ongoing research.

Starter: 29.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for keyword and competitor research. It is the lowest-cost paid entry, but the plan description does not include the larger plans’ stated project, tracking and crawl allowances.
Lite: 129.00 USD per month, billed monthly, includes 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 100,000 crawl credits per month and 1 user. It fits a small operation with modest monitoring needs; the 25,000-page project maximum and 100,000-credit Site Audit allowance constrain larger crawls.
Standard: 249.00 USD per month, billed monthly, includes 20 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords, 500,000 crawl credits per month and 1 user. It gives growing teams more room to manage sites and rankings, but still includes only one user.
Advanced: 449.00 USD per month, billed monthly, includes 50 projects, 5,000 tracked keywords, 1,500,000 crawl credits per month and 1 user. Its larger quotas suit heavier multi-site work; additional users cost extra.
Enterprise: 1499.00 USD per month with an annual commitment, from 3 included users, from 10,000 tracked keywords and from 5,000,000 crawl credits per month, plus unlimited historical data. It is the fit for organizations needing scale and administration: Enterprise adds access management, audit logs, unlimited additional users, SSO, two-factor authentication and ISO27001 certification.

On Lite, up to 2 more users cost $40/mo each; Standard allows up to 5 more at $60/mo each; Advanced allows up to 10 more at $80/mo each. Annual payment saves up to 17%. Ask Ahrefs is free during beta on Lite and above, while prompt packages and Brand Radar are separately priced: Basic prompt package is 50.00 USD per month for 2,500 checks/mo with $0.020/check overage; Growth is 100.00 USD per month for 7,000 checks/mo with $0.015/check overage; Scale is 250.00 USD per month for 25,000 checks/mo with $0.010/check overage; Brand Radar starts at 199.00 USD per month. No trial or refund policy is stated.

Platforms

Ahrefs runs on the web and offers API access, alongside AI assistants and MCP access. That combination serves browser-based work and programmatic connections, but the main product is not presented as a native desktop or mobile app.

Who it's for

Ahrefs is a strong fit for SEO specialists, content teams and agencies that value research breadth and can match a plan’s quotas to their workload. Solo users with a single site may find the Free or Starter options sufficient for limited research, while teams needing substantial tracking, crawling or multiple seats should budget for higher plans and add-ons. It is a weaker choice for buyers seeking generous included team access at entry pricing.

Pros and cons

Pros: Research, rank tracking, audits, backlink analysis and content discovery are combined, reducing the need to split those tasks across tools.
Pros: Large stated index, keyword database and daily crawler volume support broad research coverage.
Pros: API, MCP, Looker Studio and chatbot connections give technical and reporting workflows options beyond the web interface.
Cons: The free tier has limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access, and Starter does not state the larger plans’ monthly quotas.
Cons: Paid plans include only one user through Advanced, with additional seats carrying meaningful monthly charges.
Cons: The entry paid plan is $29.00 USD per month, but the explicit project and crawl allowances begin with Lite at $129.00 USD per month.

Alternatives

Wranker is worth considering for a tighter budget: its free starter plan includes 1 project, 500 keywords, daily audits and rank tracking, plus 8 content briefs per month.
Raven Tools offers a free plan and an annual Small Biz plan at 468.00 USD per year (= $39.00/month, billed annually), with 2 domains/campaigns, 2 users and 1,500 position checks.
Semrush has a free tier with 1 demo project and 10 reports per day, so it may suit someone who wants limited no-cost reporting before committing.
Moz Pro is an option for a single-site individual: its Starter plan costs 49.00 USD per month, billed monthly.
SEOVentra has a free plan with 1 domain, 200 URL submissions and 5 SEO audits per month, making it an alternative for modest monthly audit needs.
Local Falcon is a paid option for local search work, with a Starter plan at 24.99 USD per month and 7,500 credits, unlimited keywords and locations.
AgencyAnalytics is a paid alternative with per-client pricing at 25.00 USD per month and one plan that includes all features.
Dragon Metrics is another paid SEO suite; its Starter plan costs 99.00 USD per month and includes 1,000 keywords, 200,000 URLs crawled per month, 5 campaigns and 3 user seats.

Verdict

Choose Ahrefs if you want a broad SEO research and auditing toolkit backed by substantial stated data coverage, plus content features and API access. Look elsewhere if a small team needs several seats on the lower-cost plans or if modest per-site monitoring is all you need; Ahrefs’ most useful capacity scales with higher quotas and added-seat charges.
