Overview

Aiven for Valkey is a managed in-memory key/value datastore for teams building real-time services, from caches and session stores to message queues and analytics. It is best suited to developers who want Valkey managed through a cloud service rather than operating the database themselves. Its appeal is a broad management and scaling path; the free tier strips out several capabilities that matter in production.

Key features

Aiven runs Valkey 9.1 and documents compatibility with Redis OSS 7.2.4, with migration support from Redis implementations and Valkey databases. That makes it a plausible option for teams moving an existing Redis workload or starting with Valkey, while still leaving application-specific migration checks to the team.

Valkey 9 and later services enable Bloom and Search by default. Search supports vector, full-text, numeric, and tag queries, which can serve use cases such as RAG and real-time analytics alongside conventional key/value access.

Management is available through Aiven Console, CLI, API, and Terraform. Datadog, Prometheus, and Jolokia integrations support observability on eligible tiers, but the free tier has none. Teams relying on integrated monitoring will need a paid plan.

Aiven says its services use dedicated virtual machines and encryption for data in transit and at rest. SSO/SAML and VPC peering are options. The company lists ISO 27000-series, GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, and PCI DSS compliance, and provides ISAE 3000/SOC 2 Type II reports. The product page advertises a 99.99% uptime SLA, automatic failover, and backups every 12 hours, but the free tier has no SLA or support services.

Pricing

Aiven uses a freemium model, with paid plans from $15/mo and a 30-day trial. The Free plan costs $0/month and provides one dedicated VM with 1 CPU and 1 GB RAM, without a specific cloud or region, integrations, or connection pooling. It is useful for a small evaluation, but its single node, lack of support, SLA, VPCs, and static IPs make it a poor production choice where availability or private networking matters.

Developer costs $15/month for one dedicated VM, 2 CPU, and 4 GB RAM, with no specific cloud or region, integrations, or connection pooling. It offers more compute than Free, but retains those omissions. Hobbyist starts from $19/month ($0.03/hour) for one VM with 1 CPU and 1 GB RAM, a modest-resource option for workloads that fit those limits.

Startup starts from $19/month ($0.03/hour), with one dedicated VM, 1–32 CPU, 1–192 GB RAM, and a 99.99% uptime SLA. It suits teams that need more room and an availability commitment on a single VM. Business starts from $70/month ($0.10/hour) and adds high availability with two dedicated VMs, each configurable from 1–32 CPU and 1–192 GB RAM, making it the more appropriate step for workloads that cannot rely on one VM. Premium starts from $85/month ($0.12/hour) and adds a second standby node to Business, using three dedicated VMs; it is aimed at teams seeking that extra standby capacity.

A baseline support tier is included with every Aiven plan at no extra charge, though the Free plan has no support services. Choose among plans by weighing compute and availability against the missing integrations and networking options at the low end; the higher plans add redundancy, not merely a larger price tag.

Platforms

Aiven for Valkey is available through an API, on Linux, and on the web. Its management options include a console, CLI, API, and Terraform, while the service itself is managed rather than self-hosted.

Who it's for

The service fits solo developers through enterprise engineering teams that want a managed Valkey datastore for real-time applications and a path from a small instance to high availability. It is less suitable for teams that require integrated monitoring or private networking on a free plan, or for those who specifically want to run and operate the database themselves.

Pros and cons

Pros: Redis OSS 7.2.4 compatibility and migration support lower the barrier for existing Redis workloads.
Pros: Valkey Search includes vector and full-text queries by default on Valkey 9 and later, alongside numeric and tag queries.
Pros: Console, CLI, API, and Terraform provide multiple management approaches, and paid tiers extend to high availability and a second standby node.
Cons: Free has one node, 1 CPU, 1 GB RAM, no integrations or support services, and no 99.99% SLA, limiting its role to evaluation or small workloads.
Cons: Free and Developer have no specific cloud or region and no connection pooling; Free also cannot use VPCs or static IPs.

Alternatives

For a broader set of caching choices, browse Caching Software.

Amazon ElastiCache is a paid alternative with a free plan and API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows platforms; its AWS Free Tier offers eligible new signups $100 in credits and up to an additional $100 for activating features. Consider it when that AWS credit structure fits your starting budget.

Garnet is a free option for Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosting; its self-hosted plan leaves infrastructure, updates, and operations to you. Choose it if you want to manage the deployment yourself.

Squid is free, self-hosted proxy software for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with third-party commercial support potentially available. It is a different option for teams seeking proxy software rather than managed Valkey.

Alibaba Cloud Tair is a paid service with a free trial; its Redis OSS-Compatible Open Source Edition offers new users 30 days with 1 GB RAM. It may suit readers who want to assess that trial offering.

Hazelcast Platform is a freemium alternative with a free plan and trial, available on API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, and Windows platforms; its self-managed professional-support subscription has custom pricing.

Memcached is free, open-source, self-hosted software with no hosted plan or price listed, making it an option for teams prepared to operate their own cache.

Varnish Cache is free, self-hosted Linux software under the BSD-2-Clause license, for readers seeking that deployment model.

Accessibility Test Framework for Android is a free alternative with no trial, available on Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Verdict

Choose Aiven for Valkey if you want a managed, Redis-compatible datastore with flexible administration and a paid route to high availability. Its strongest reason to buy is the combination of Valkey Search and managed operations; its clearest reason to look elsewhere is the steep capability gap between the limited free and entry plans and the paid tiers that add availability and networking options.
