Overview

Akeneo brings product information together for enrichment and distribution across eCommerce, print catalogs, distributors, dealers, and direct sales. The model supports variants, hierarchies, localization, business logic, and reference entities, giving teams a way to manage more than a flat product list.

Deployment is a meaningful choice. Community Edition is open-source and can be downloaded, installed, hosted, and customized by the user. That suits organizations with the technical capacity to operate their own system, but support is community-based or through certified solution partners. Growth, Advanced, and Premium are SaaS plans with SLA-backed support; Premium adds 24/7 support.

Key features

Catalog quality and governance

A dashboard monitors data quality and completeness and recommends ways to improve catalog scores. Role-based permissions, assigned tasks, approval workflows, and completeness and status indicators help teams assign ownership and check readiness before distribution. These controls are most useful when multiple contributors share responsibility for catalog accuracy.

Distribution and integrations

Akeneo supports product information across several kinds of sales activity, and its ecosystem includes more than 250 apps, with integrations spanning eCommerce platforms, digital asset management, CRM, and supplier management tools. That breadth can help connect catalog work to adjacent systems, though the one included activation channel on each paid plan may limit how many destinations a team can activate without considering additional requirements.

Security

Akeneo states that it is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified and SOC 2 Type I compliant, supports GDPR and other applicable regulations, and encrypts data in transit with TLS 1.2+ and at rest, including backups, with AES-256. SSO through SAML 2.0 and OpenID Connect and least-privilege role-based access controls support organizations with formal access policies.

Pricing

Akeneo uses a freemium model, with a free open-source Community Edition and a free plan. Growth, Advanced, and Premium have custom pricing, and each includes one activation channel. The plan names alone do not establish a difference in features or quotas, so buyers should match their needs with Akeneo before committing.

Community Edition: Free open-source PIM for centralizing, managing, enriching, and distributing product information. It is the option for teams prepared to install, host, and customize the software themselves; peer community support and certified partners are the support routes.
Growth: SaaS with one activation channel and SLA-backed support. It may suit organizations seeking managed deployment with a limited initial distribution footprint.
Advanced: SaaS with one activation channel and SLA-backed support. Teams considering it should confirm that its package fits their operational needs, since the channel allowance is the same as Growth.
Premium: SaaS with one activation channel, SLA-backed support, and 24/7 support. The added support coverage is relevant to organizations that need round-the-clock assistance, but does not increase the included channel count.

Akeneo offers a free trial. No trial duration or renewal terms are stated, so those should be confirmed directly when evaluating a SaaS plan.

Platforms

Akeneo supports API, self-hosted, and web use. The self-hosted route is especially relevant to teams that want to control installation and customization; SaaS is the managed alternative for customers choosing Growth, Advanced, or Premium.

Who it's for

Akeneo is a good fit for businesses with structured, multilingual catalogs, multiple contributors, and product content that must serve different sales contexts. Its modeling and workflow tools are particularly relevant when product variants, hierarchies, localization, and approvals are part of routine catalog work. It is less compelling for a small operation that only needs a straightforward product list or for a team that requires several activation channels within its paid plan.

Pros and cons

Pro: Product modeling accommodates variants, hierarchies, localization, business logic, and reference entities, supporting complex catalogs.
Pro: Quality dashboards, recommendations, assigned tasks, and approval workflows provide concrete ways to improve completeness and coordinate review.
Pro: Community Edition permits user-managed hosting and customization, while paid SaaS plans include SLA-backed support.
Con: Each paid plan includes only one activation channel, which can be restrictive for teams distributing to several destinations.
Con: Community Edition puts installation, hosting, and customization on the user, and its support is community or partner-based rather than the SLA-backed coverage of SaaS.
Con: Premium adds 24/7 support but still includes one channel, so it does not address broader activation needs.

Alternatives

Compare options in the Product Information Management Software directory. PIMinto is worth considering for teams that want a free plan with 1,000 SKUs, 1 GB of storage, and unlimited outputs, or a web, iOS, and Android offering. Pimcore may suit buyers seeking a self-hosted, Linux, web, and API option with a free Community Edition for non-production use and annual revenue under EUR/USD 5 million. Informatica Product 360 is a paid alternative for organizations considering a product MDM offering across API, self-hosted, web, and Windows. UnoPim is another free option, with a Starter Pack described as covering 10,000 SKUs, 15 GB media storage, 5,000 API calls per hour, three channels, and five locales. WISEPIM may appeal to teams looking for a free plan capped at 100 products with 50 AI credits per month and three languages. Plytix is an alternative for small teams whose stated Standard plan includes unlimited seats and file storage, 25 GB of monthly CDN traffic, and 2,000 API calls per hour. Precisely EnterWorks is another paid option. Acquia PIM is another paid alternative.

Verdict

Choose Akeneo PIM if your organization needs a structured, multilingual catalog with quality controls and approvals, and can work within one included activation channel on a paid plan or operate Community Edition itself. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of flexible data modeling and governed enrichment; look elsewhere if multi-channel activation is central or you need a simple catalog tool.
