Overview

Alison is a self-paced learning platform that pairs courses and career-development resources with an LMS for organisations. It suits learners looking to build skills without an upfront course fee, as well as small teams that can work within the Free LMS’s 10-user cap.

Its breadth is the draw; the trade-offs are advertising in free learning and practical limits on offline study. Larger organisations should compare the paid LMS+ tiers against their testing, certificate and storage needs.

Key features

Learning and credentials

The library spans more than 6,000 courses across 10 categories, and Alison describes its courses as CPD UK accredited. Learners can work at their own pace without a stated completion deadline. Courses can lead to Certificates or Diplomas, though free learning includes advertising; Premium is offered to remove it.

Career resources

Alison adds psychometric assessments and career tools, including a Career Ready Plan, Career Guide, résumé builder, job listings and course recommendations. That combination makes it more useful for learners connecting study to job preparation than a course catalogue alone.

Offline access

Offline learning requires the Alison App and is currently limited to English courses. Quizzes, assessments and certificates still require an internet connection, and downloaded courses are for personal use rather than sharing or distribution. The app requires Android 7 or higher or iOS 15.6 or higher, so offline access is a convenience for studying course material, not a fully disconnected learning experience.

Learning management

The Free LMS supports basic assignment and reporting for up to 10 users per organisation, with access to more than 6,000 courses and no software, content or implementation fees. Organisations can invite learners, assign courses, manage groups and control roles and permissions. LMS+ removes user caps and adds features such as advanced reporting, co-branded certificates and Content Hub storage; Alison also offers API integration, though customers need their technical teams to assess compatibility with their systems.

Pricing

Alison uses a freemium model. Learners can take free courses, study at their own pace and access Certificates and Diplomas. Free learning includes advertising. For offline study, the one-course download costs 1.00 USD per once; the Unlimited Offline Access plan is 5.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and permits unlimited downloads while the subscription is active. Downloads remain for personal use.

For organisations, Free LMS costs 0.00 USD per free and covers up to 10 users per organisation. That is a sensible starting point for a small group, but teams above the cap need an LMS+ plan.

Plan	Price	Included allowance	Best fit
LMS+ Starter	99.00 USD per month, billed monthly	3 complimentary certificates per month, 30% off bulk certificate purchases and 500 MB Content Hub storage per month	Small organisations with modest certificate and storage needs
LMS+ Growth	249.00 USD per month, billed monthly	Up to 180 psychometric tests per month, 10 complimentary certificates per month, 40% off bulk certificate purchases and 3 GB Content Hub storage per month; free trial available	Teams needing assessments and a larger monthly allowance
LMS+ Enterprise	599.00 USD per month, billed monthly	Up to 600 psychometric tests per month, 20 complimentary certificates per month, 50% off bulk certificate purchases and 5 GB Content Hub storage per month	Organisations with higher testing, certificate and storage requirements

LMS+ has no user limits, seat licences or usage tiers, but the monthly test, certificate and storage allowances vary by plan. The Growth plan’s free trial is the stated trial option; monthly billing applies to the paid LMS+ tiers.

Platforms

Alison runs on the web and has Android and iOS apps. Offline learning is app-only, English-only, and requires internet for quizzes, assessments and certificates.

Who it's for

Alison is a strong fit for independent learners who want a broad free catalogue, flexible study and career resources in one place. Its LMS is aimed at employee, compliance, customer, partner, franchise, government, education, startup, nonprofit and training-provider programmes. The Free LMS suits organisations with no more than 10 users; larger groups should assess LMS+ allowances and costs before committing.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 6,000 free courses and self-paced study give learners broad access without a course fee.
Pros: Career tools and psychometric assessments add practical support beyond course completion.
Pros: The Free LMS includes course access without software, content or implementation fees, within its 10-user limit.
Cons: Advertising is part of free learning, so an ad-free experience requires Premium.
Cons: Offline use is limited to English course material in the app; key learning activities and credentials need an internet connection.
Cons: Free LMS is capped at 10 users, while paid LMS+ plans have monthly test, certificate and storage allowances to manage.

Alternatives

Choose edX if its free audit track, with limited course access and no graded assignments or certificate, better matches your needs. Pluralsight is a paid alternative with a free trial and apps across mobile, desktop and web platforms. Consider Great Learning for a free-course option with more than 1,000 courses and certificates available for a nominal fee. Khan Academy is another freemium option with Android, iOS and web access. Brilliant offers a free tier capped at two lessons or practice sets per day. Coursera, DataCamp and FutureLearn are also alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Choose Alison if you want a large, self-paced free course library with career resources, credentials and an option to add organisational learning management. Its strongest case is breadth without upfront learner fees. Look elsewhere if you need fully offline study, or if your organisation exceeds the Free LMS limit and the LMS+ monthly allowances do not fit your needs.
