Overview

Founded in 2012 by professors from Harvard and MIT, edX offers courses and programs from universities, institutions, 2U and other partners. Its catalog spans individual courses, certificates, executive education, microcredentials and degrees. Courses combine video and text lessons with discussion forums, problems and assessments; many are self-paced, and individual courses generally take two to six weeks. Some courses have deadlines.

Study formats across the broader offering include flexible, hybrid, fully online and self-paced options. edX reports more than 250 content partners and a network of 100 million learners worldwide. That breadth makes it useful for exploring a subject or pursuing longer professional study, though the right access route matters: free auditing is not equivalent to a complete course enrollment.

Key features

Audit or verified study: Auditing provides a low-risk way to explore a course, but limits content access and excludes graded assignments and certificates. Material access ends when the course ends. Verified learners get unlimited access to lectures, readings and lessons after the course, plus graded assignments and a verified certificate.
Certificates and programs: Certificates are issued by the university or organization offering the course and include a verification link employers can check. Beyond individual courses, edX offers professional certificates, executive education, microcredentials and degrees, giving learners routes to deeper study without making every course the same commitment.
Mobile learning: The free app supports enrollment, videos, handouts, announcements, discussions and most assignments, with offline video downloads. It cannot be used for timed or proctored exams, so learners whose course includes those assessments will need another way to complete them.
Institutional learning: edX integrates with leading LMS and custom platforms, including SSO and grade pass-back. Business integrations include Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, Workday and LinkedIn Learning Hub, among others. Enterprise API access returns course data in JSON or XML; SAML 2.0 SSO is supported.
Administrative and learner support: Institutional tools include analytics dashboards, student portals and administrative tools. Higher-education subscriptions support SSO, social learning, collaboration and grade pass-back; enterprise plans can include advanced analytics, dedicated support and tailored integrations.
Accessibility and security: edX aims to align its website and course-authoring tools with WCAG 2.1 AA and requires timed captions for course videos. Engineers review, triage and address reported security vulnerabilities.

Pricing

edX is freemium. Individual learners can audit courses for free, but lose graded assignments, certificates and access to course materials after the course ends. Verified individual courses start at around $50; the Verified track adds unlimited content access, graded work and a certificate. For learners who need completion evidence or lasting course access, that is the more useful option.

Professional Certificate Programs start at $500.00 USD per once, while Executive Education Programs start at $2,500.00 USD per once. These are larger commitments than a single verified course and suit learners pursuing a multi-course credential or executive education rather than a short trial of a topic.

For organizations, Starter costs $349.00 USD per year per learner and provides unlimited catalog access and tools for a classroom or department. Essentials costs $150.00 USD per year per user for one academy and 16 self-paced courses, a narrower option for teams with modest needs. Teams costs $396.00 USD per year per user for eight academies, more than 2,300 self-paced courses and more than 300 professional certificates; it includes a 14 day free trial. Enterprise is for 50 or more learners, with eight academies, more than 2,300 courses and more than 300 certificates, at custom pricing. The Campus Plan also uses custom pricing for institution-wide learning and extended services. Team subscriptions provide employees unlimited access to courses and certificate programs.

Platforms

edX is available on the web, Android and iOS. Offline video downloads are useful when connectivity is limited, but they do not remove the app's timed- and proctored-exam restriction.

Who it's for

edX is a strong fit for learners seeking university-backed courses, professional development or a verified certificate, and for institutions that need LMS connections, learner analytics or organization-wide course access. It is less suitable for someone who expects free auditing to include grades, a credential or permanent access to course materials. Learners taking app-based courses with timed or proctored exams must also plan to complete those exams outside the app.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free auditing makes it possible to explore course content before committing to a paid certificate.
Pro: Verified access preserves course materials after the course ends and adds graded assignments and a verifiable certificate.
Pro: The catalog spans short courses through degrees, with formats including hybrid and self-paced study.
Pro: Institutional integrations and administrative tools support deployment beyond individual enrollment.
Con: The free audit route omits grades and certificates and ends access to course materials when the course ends.
Con: Verified courses start around $50, while certificate and executive programs require substantially larger upfront payments.
Con: Timed and proctored exams cannot be taken in the mobile app.

Alternatives

Pluralsight is a paid alternative with a free trial and Android, iOS, web, Linux, macOS and Windows support; consider it when those platforms matter more than edX's free audit option.
Alison offers free self-paced courses, with certificates and diplomas available, making it an alternative for learners prioritizing free study.
Great Learning has free courses and certificates available for a nominal fee; consider it for a free-course route.
Coursera is another freemium learning platform with a free plan and free trial.
DataCamp offers a free tier with the first chapter of every course and limited access to practice and projects; it may suit learners who want to sample course material before paying.
FutureLearn offers limited free access to short-course materials, with content delivered weekly; choose it if that format fits your study pace.
LinkedIn Learning is a paid alternative with a free trial.
OpenClassrooms offers free-access courses as well as paid training paths.

Verdict

Choose edX if you want university-backed learning with a clear route from free exploration to graded study and a verifiable certificate, or if your institution needs learning integrations and administrative tools. Look elsewhere if free access must include grades and a certificate, or if you need to take timed or proctored exams in a mobile app.
