Overview

The service stores original customer content and generated assets in Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering, and supports original-quality storage across formats including JPEG, HEIC, ProRaw, MP4, AVI and several RAW formats. Its scope is personal use only; it is not intended for commercial collections.

Storage limits have real consequences. An over-quota account cannot upload, sync or share, and after 180 days files are deleted until the account is no longer over quota. After two years without an upload, download or sign-in, all files are deleted following prior notification. Anyone using Amazon Photos as their sole archive should keep an eye on capacity and account activity.

Key features

Auto-Save backs up camera rolls on iOS and Android, while Desktop Backup saves folders from Windows and Mac computers. This gives households a straightforward way to bring phone and computer libraries together, although videos can quickly consume storage on the smaller plans.

Image recognition organizes photos by people, places, things and dates, with natural-language search for finding images. Tagging is enabled automatically when the service is first used, but can be disabled in account settings. The built-in editor crops, adjusts and applies filters; it covers basic touch-ups rather than establishing a case for replacing a dedicated editing app.

Sharing groups support up to 2,500 groups, with as many as 50 members in each. Family Vault accommodates six members, each with an Amazon Photos account at no extra cost. Photos can also be displayed on Echo Show, Echo Spot and Fire TV, including as backgrounds and screensavers. U.S. customers can order prints, photo books and gifts through Amazon Prints.

Pricing

The free Amazon Photos storage plan is free and provides 5 GB shared by photos and videos. It is a useful starting point, but a modest allowance for a library that includes video.

Prime members get unlimited full-resolution photo storage at no cost, plus 5 GB for videos and other files. This is the strongest fit for photo-heavy libraries; the video allowance remains limited, so it does not make the entire collection unlimited.

For additional storage, 50 GB costs 0.99 USD per month (billed $0.99/month; about 7 hours of 1080p HD video), and 100 GB costs 1.99 USD per month (billed $1.99/month; about 14 hours). These lower tiers suit smaller collections but leave less room for video than the larger plans. The 1 TB plan costs 6.99 USD per month (billed $6.99/month; about 140 hours), while 2 TB costs 11.99 USD per month (billed $11.99/month; about 280 hours). Those tiers better fit substantial mixed libraries, though quota rules still apply.

Platforms

Amazon Photos runs on Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows. Mobile camera-roll backup and desktop folder backup cover the main personal-library sources, while Amazon display devices add a way to put selected photos on screens at home.

Who it's for

Choose Amazon Photos if you want automatic backups across phones and computers, useful search and family sharing, or if you are a Prime member who needs a photo-focused archive. It is less suitable as the only copy of a large video library or for commercial use.

Pros and cons

Prime includes unlimited full-resolution photo storage: a strong benefit for photo-heavy personal libraries, though videos and other files still share a 5 GB allowance.
Broad backup and discovery tools: camera-roll and desktop-folder backups pair with image recognition and natural-language search.
Flexible sharing and display: Family Vault supports six members, and sharing groups can include up to 50 people each.
Strict over-quota and inactivity outcomes: uploads, sync and sharing stop over quota, with deletion after 180 days; inactivity can also lead to deletion after two years.

Alternatives

Ente Photos is worth considering if you want a larger free allowance: its free plan includes 10 GB, while its Starter plan offers 50 GB and a family plan for 2.49 USD per month.

jAlbum may suit a small web-publishing project: its free plan allows up to 24 objects with own-site storage, and its Super Account includes 300 GB and commercial use at custom pricing.

Lomorage is a free-software option for people prepared to provide external storage; it has no rate limit or account-number limit.

PhotoStructure is an alternative for people who want portable libraries and duplicate or edited-copy grouping in its free Lite plan.

Piwigo offers a free self-hosted plan with features, themes and plugins, for readers who prefer a self-hosted gallery.

Flickr may be a better fit for public sharing: its free plan allows 1,000 public photo and video uploads and includes ads; Pro costs 8.00 USD per month, billed annually, for unlimited uploads.

Tonfotos offers a free lifetime license with the paid version's functionality, but limits the number of people represented in photos.

Google Photos is another freemium photo service to compare.

Verdict

Amazon Photos is a strong choice for personal, photo-heavy libraries, especially when Prime's unlimited full-resolution photo storage matches your needs. Its backup, search and family features make it more than a passive archive. Look elsewhere or keep an independent copy if you need generous video storage, commercial use or protection from the service's quota and inactivity deletion rules.
