| Documentation depth | The developer reference includes API references, code examples, CLI examples, SDK documentation and quota guidance. | The administrator guide covers prerequisites, installation, configuration, protection, restoration, failover, recovery-site operations, point-in-time recovery, upgrades, uninstalling and support. |
| Replication | S3 Replication copies objects, metadata and tags within the same Region or across Regions. | It continuously replicates VM data to object storage and describes its recovery point objective as near zero. |
| Security | AWS states that S3 is private and encrypted by default and supports fine-grained access controls, compliance functions and auditing. | The administrator guide says management and appliance communications use HTTPS REST calls and trusted certificates, and SSH keys are passphrase protected. |
| What it does | Amazon S3 is AWS object storage for retrieving any amount of data from anywhere on the web. | JetStream DR provides continuous disaster recovery for VMware virtual machines by replicating workloads to object storage and recovering them in a secondary environment. |

In their own words
Amazon S3
Amazon S3 is an object storage service for storing, managing, analyzing, and protecting data used by data lakes, cloud-native applications, and mobile apps. Capacity adjusts as objects are added or removed, without requiring storage to be provisioned in advance. Storage classes cover frequent access, infrequent access, and archiving. Versioning preserves object versions, while Replication can copy objects to buckets in the same or different AWS Regions. Amazon Athena and Redshift Spectrum can query S3 data in place with SQL; S3 Vectors adds vector storage and querying, including integration with Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases. Security controls include encryption for uploads, Block Public Access, and Object Lock for customer-defined retention periods. AWS documents access through its Management Console, CLI, SDKs, and REST API. S3 is listed for Android, API, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. A Free Tier is available. Pricing is usage-based, with charges varying across storage, requests, retrieval, transfer, and other features. Some archived objects have minimum storage durations of 90 or 180 days, and early deletion incurs a prorated charge.
JetStream DR
JetStream DR provides continuous data protection and disaster recovery for VMware workloads. It replicates VM data to object storage, with a stated recovery point objective of near zero, and says it can bring VMs back online within minutes using recovery clusters provisioned on demand. It captures data through VMware vSphere I/O Filters and is managed from a vCenter plug-in or the vSphere Web GUI. Protected VMs do not need installed agents or snapshots, according to the maker. Listed targets include S3-compatible storage such as AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage, Cloudian, and MinIO, as well as Azure NetApp Files. Its hypervisor-level software supports on-premises SAN, NAS, vSAN, and HCI environments, with VMware-compatible recovery infrastructure. Coverage is listed for vSphere 7 and 8, with hybrid deployment, cloud backup targets, and off-site replication. JetStream DR for AVS is obtained through Azure Marketplace; on-premises installations use an OVA from JetStream support. The company describes the product as built for service providers supporting customers’ on-premises continuity needs.
