Overview

The Readability Scoring System estimates the grade level and age readers may need to understand submitted text. You can paste text or upload .txt, .docx, .rtf, .html, and .pdf files. Sentence analysis and clarity recommendations help turn scores into revision prompts, though a formula cannot by itself determine whether a passage works for its intended audience.

Processing for submitted text runs through scripts in the user’s browser, and the privacy policy says that text is not stored on a server or accessible to the site. Synonym Finder is a separate case: it can transmit one word at a time to Datamuse’s API.

Key features

Scoring and editing

The system includes Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Dale-Chall, Spache, FORCAST, Fry, and Raygor. That range is useful when a writer or educator wants to compare how different formulas characterize the same English passage, rather than treating one score as definitive.

The beta Robert Gunning Editor identifies hard words and wordiness, with tools for phrases, nominalizations, fuzzy words, weak verbs, and more. It connects assessment to revision, but its beta status makes it a less secure choice for a workflow that depends on a mature editing tool.

Statistics, batches, and browser checks

Text Statistics reports syllable count, average sentence length, abbreviations, proper nouns, and passive voice. Batch Processing, also marked beta, can score multiple texts with one or more formulas, a useful option for comparing a set of documents without changing the tool’s English-language focus.

The Chrome and Microsoft Edge extension can score highlighted website text, open the editor, and show word statistics. That makes it more convenient for checking published web copy than a workflow limited to uploading documents, while remaining tied to those two browsers.

Pricing

The Free online readability tools plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes free calculators and the Readability Scoring System. It is the natural fit for occasional checks and users who want the core scoring tools without a subscription. The plan is described as free; no paid tier is needed to use those features.

Platforms

Readability Formulas is available on the web, macOS, and Windows, with an extension for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. The extension is particularly useful for assessing text directly on websites; desktop and web access suit users working with submitted documents or pasted passages.

Who it's for

Writers and editors can use the formula comparisons, statistics, and editing aids to identify passages that may need attention. Educators can compare reading levels, while marketing professionals, healthcare providers, and government agencies may benefit when they need to assess the accessibility of English-language text. It is not a fit for work that requires language support beyond English.

Pros and cons

Pros: A broad collection of named scoring formulas lets users compare measures instead of relying on a single score.
Pros: File uploads, pasted text, sentence analysis, and statistics support assessment of both drafts and existing documents.
Pros: Local browser processing for submitted text offers a privacy-conscious approach.
Cons: The Editor and Batch Processing are beta, so they may not suit workflows that depend on established tools.
Cons: English-only support rules it out for multilingual readability assessment.
Cons: Synonym Finder may send a word to Datamuse, so it does not share the stated local-processing approach for submitted text.

Alternatives

Hemingway Editor is worth considering for readers who want an editor with a free plan and trial, or paid individual plans that allocate 5,000 or 10,000 AI sentences per month. Text Inspector may suit users who need API access or a defined free allowance: its free plan covers 250 words and automatically deletes data after six hours.

TextGears is an alternative for users looking for API access and a PRO plan with unlimited checks, translations, and paraphrases of long texts, plus custom dictionary rules and an option not to store texts. ProWritingAid offers a free plan for writers, with 500 words per report run and daily limits on report runs and other tools.

Eclipse Readability Studio is a free, open-source option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. ATOS Analyzer is a free web option for text passages or books, with a 25,000-character text limit and 10MB maximum upload. Check Readability is a free web and extension option with no account or usage fees and personal and commercial use. Readability Analysis Tool (RAT) is a free GPLv3 project for Linux and Windows that supports .docx and German readability rules.

Verdict

Choose Readability Formulas if you want free English readability scoring across a wide range of formulas, with statistics and editing aids alongside it. Its privacy-conscious handling of submitted text is a further advantage. Look elsewhere if you need languages beyond English or a dependable non-beta editor and batch workflow.
