Overview

AndreaMosaic builds large images from smaller pictures in a collection, making it a fit for photographers and designers who want to turn their own image library into a mosaic. Its free Standard edition is a meaningful starting point; the main decision is whether its tile and image caps, or the credit requirement, work for your project.

It is desktop software for Windows, macOS and Linux. The full free version has no demo restriction or time limit and permits personal and commercial use, provided you credit AndreaMosaic.

Key features

AndreaMosaic draws on a custom tile library, offers controls for tile reuse and supports batch processing. Output formats include JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PNG, PSD, PSB and PPM. That range is useful for both standard image delivery and workflows involving Photoshop files.

Capacity and some export options depend on the edition. Standard allows 50,000 source images and 30,000 tiles in a mosaic up to 200 megapixels. Bonus keeps the 30,000-tile ceiling and raises the image collection limit to 100,000; it also adds patterns and transparency in TIFF and Photoshop formats. Professional supports up to 2 million images, 500,000 tiles and 100 gigapixels, and adds Photoshop tile layers and individual tile export. Those Professional limits make it the relevant edition for unusually large projects, while Standard should cover smaller work without an upfront charge.

The download page recommends selected K-Lite Video for Windows codecs for extracting images from video files. That makes video a possible source for tiles, but the codec recommendation adds a setup step for that workflow.

Pricing

Edition	Price	What it includes
Standard (Free)	Free	200 megapixels, 30,000 tiles, 50,000 images, and mosaic creation and printing features.
Bonus	Custom pricing	30,000 tiles, 100,000 images, more patterns than Standard, and TIFF/Photoshop transparency.
Professional	Custom pricing	100 gigapixels, 500,000 tiles, 2,000,000 images, Photoshop tile layers and individual tile export.

Standard is the clear choice for cost-conscious projects within its capacity: it is free for personal and commercial use, without a time limit, but requires a reference or credit to AndreaMosaic. Bonus is for users who need its extra patterns, larger image collection or transparency, though its tile cap remains the same as Standard. Professional is aimed at work that outgrows Standard's capacity or needs layered and individual-tile exports. Bonus and Professional have custom pricing, so compare their checkout terms before choosing.

Platforms

AndreaMosaic runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The Windows download page covers XP through Windows 11 and offers a portable version. Separate macOS downloads cover versions 10.7–10.14 and 10.15–26. Linux users can run the software through PlayOnLinux or Wine, rather than a listed native Linux build.

The download page links VirusTotal reports for Windows, macOS installer, portable and Mojave downloads, and says those downloads are verified by more than 50 antivirus programs. For support, the maker directs users to a helpdesk ticket form. Its privacy policy says personal data is used to provide licenses and support and meet tax and accounting obligations; payment providers handle transactions, are PCI-DSS compliant, and do not pass full card numbers to Unyma.

Who it's for

AndreaMosaic suits people who already have a substantial picture collection and want control over tile reuse, batch creation or output format. Standard is particularly appealing for personal or commercial use when a credit is acceptable and a 200-megapixel, 30,000-tile ceiling is sufficient. Bonus fits users who need more patterns or transparency without increasing that tile ceiling. Professional is the better fit for very large mosaics or workflows requiring tile-level Photoshop output.

Look elsewhere if crediting the software is unsuitable, if Linux support through Wine or PlayOnLinux is not a fit, or if you need to settle a paid-edition budget before checkout.

Pros and cons

Pros: The full Standard edition is free without a time limit and allows commercial use, giving smaller projects real working capacity rather than a demo-only taste.
Pros: Professional scales to 100 gigapixels and 500,000 tiles, with tile-layer and individual-tile exports for more involved output workflows.
Pros: A broad set of raster and Photoshop formats, plus custom libraries, reuse controls and batch processing, supports varied mosaic workflows.
Cons: Standard requires a credit and caps output at 200 megapixels and 30,000 tiles, which can disqualify it for larger or uncredited work.
Cons: Bonus does not raise the tile ceiling, and its price is custom; its value therefore hinges on needing the additional patterns, image capacity or transparency.
Cons: Linux depends on PlayOnLinux or Wine, and the video-extraction workflow calls for selected Windows codecs.

Alternatives

Choose Picture Mosaics Online Mosaic Tool if you prefer web or iOS access and free account-based creation; downloads, prints and video files are paid, with a personal SD video download at 29.00 USD per once.

EasyMoza is a web option if a low-resolution free download and online sharing are enough, or its 595.00 USD per once XL High Resolution plan fits your print needs.

Mazaika is worth considering for a paid desktop workflow across Linux, macOS and Windows: its free trial runs 30 days and limits output to 2500x2500 pixels, 32x32 tiles and JPG.

Pick Rapid-Mosaic if Windows-local creation and the option to order prints online suit you; its Standard is free, while Professional costs 29.00 GBP per once.

phomo is a free alternative for users comfortable with a Python package and command-line utility; CUDA acceleration requires compatible hardware and the CUDA toolkit.

Photo Mosaica is an iOS and macOS alternative from an independent Toronto game studio, with a free tier for adjustable mosaic diversity and size.

Photo Mosaic Maker may suit users seeking a paid desktop product with a 30-day trial; its X9 Standard costs 24.95 USD per once and supports up to 2,000 library images and 10,000 cells.

PicTiler is a web alternative if standard-quality output is enough on its free service, or consider its paid HD service for enhanced resolution and quality options.

Verdict

Choose AndreaMosaic if you want desktop mosaic creation with a genuinely usable, commercially permitted free edition and can meet its credit and capacity terms. Its strongest reason to stay is the Professional edition's substantial scale and tile-level exports; look elsewhere if the credit requirement, custom paid-edition pricing or Linux compatibility route does not suit your project.
