In their own words
AnythingLLM
AnythingLLM is a private AI assistant for desktop, mobile, cloud, and self-hosted use. Its desktop product runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux, and the free Desktop plan requires no account or API key and has no token limits. It can turn documents into an agent knowledge base while keeping the data on the device. Desktop tools include file-system capabilities, web search and scraping, model selection, background jobs, custom agent skills, and a Meeting Assistant that records, transcribes, summarizes, and indexes meetings on the computer without a bot joining or cloud processing. The mobile app runs small models on-device and includes web search, document chat, file generation, scheduled jobs, and memory. Supported providers range from Ollama and LM Studio to OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google Gemini Pro. Cloud instances support multiple users, tenant isolation, admin controls, and white-labeling. Self-hosted data remains on the user's infrastructure, according to the maker. The free plan is available; Basic costs $50 a month and Pro costs $99 a month.
Open WebUI
Open WebUI is a self-hosted interface for local and cloud AI models, designed to run entirely offline. It connects to Ollama and OpenAI-compatible APIs. Installation options include Docker, pip, uv, and desktop setup; the documentation recommends Docker or Python for production deployments. Listed capabilities include voice, vision, retrieval, generation, search, Python extensions, file uploads, image generation, app integrations, and team workspaces. Its extension system supports Filters, Actions, Pipes, Tools, and Skills, and can connect through MCP, MCPO, and OpenAPI tool servers. Knowledge retrieval includes local RAG with nine vector databases, multiple content-extraction engines, hybrid search, reranking, and full-context mode. Organizations can deploy it on-premises, in a private cloud, or in an air-gapped environment. The operator configures where chats and other data are stored; data can be routed externally when external providers, tools, model endpoints, or integrations are configured. The software is free to use as-is with original branding intact. Deployments with more than 50 users must keep Open WebUI branding visible unless an exception applies.
