Apache Directory Server
Apache Directory Server (ApacheDS) is an extensible directory server written in Java, certified LDAPv3 compatible by the Open Group. It supports LDAP, Kerberos 5, and the Change Password Protocol, and can also be embedded in Java applications. Server configuration uses LDIF files; pluggable components and subsystems let different backends be added to its partition nexus. For access control, ApacheDS adapts the X.500 basic access control scheme and uses X.500 subentries to control access to directory entries and attributes. Version 2.0 supports multi-master replication via RFC 4533 and is described as compatible with OpenLDAP. It also supports the LDAP Password Policy draft for enforcing stronger password rules. ApacheDS is free, with a free plan and no free trial, and is listed for Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted use. The project says it is not production ready because of data corruption issues. It identifies testing, development, and education as suitable uses until the issue is fixed, and advises minimizing updates and keeping backups if it is used in production.
Appy Pie AI Directory Website Builder
Appy Pie AI Directory Website Builder is a web tool for creating business directories, classified sites, local listing portals, and niche professional directories without coding. A plain-language brief can generate a 14-page directory with categories, a submission form, paid-tier checkout, and map search. Templates cover businesses, classifieds, local listings, restaurants, wedding vendors, professions, and member associations. Visitors can submit listings for admin review or claim existing entries; owners can configure paid listing tiers billed monthly, annually, or once. Listings support ratings and text reviews, with email verification and profanity flagging among the moderation controls. Google Maps integration, map search, SEO-friendly listing URLs, sitemap support, and LocalBusiness schema markup are listed. AI tools can draft descriptions, create neighborhood pages, identify duplicate imports, and translate listings into 30+ languages. A Migration Assistant imports CSV listings from several named directory services and public exports. The free plan costs nothing and includes up to 50 listings, basic category filters, standard templates, and an *.appypie.com subdomain. The page advises against using the product for 100K+ listings requiring custom database sharding, deep WordPress plugin integrations, or on-premises deployment. Appy Pie was founded in 2016 and is headquartered in Noida, India.
