PurposeApache Druid is a high-performance real-time analytics database for sub-second queries on streaming and batch data at scale.Apache Storm is a distributed realtime computation system for reliably processing unbounded data streams.
ReliabilityDruid provides continuous backup, automated recovery, and multi-node replication for high availability and durability.Storm is designed to be scalable, fault-tolerant, and to guarantee data processing.
SecuritySecurity features include TLS, authentication, and authorization, but they are disabled by default and the documentation says to configure them for production.Storm supports pluggable Kerberos/SASL authentication and SimpleACLAuthorizer authorization, both disabled by default.

In their own words

Apache Druid

Apache Druid is a free, open-source analytics database for querying streaming and batch data. It is designed to return OLAP queries in milliseconds, including on high-cardinality datasets with billions to trillions of rows. The project describes applications ranging from hundreds to 100,000 queries per second. Native Apache Kafka and Amazon Kinesis integrations support low-latency ingestion and querying as data arrives. Druid organizes ingested data into columnar, time-indexed, encoded and compressed storage. Queries can use Druid SQL or JSON-over-HTTP, and joins are available during ingestion or at query time. Its web console can load data, manage datasources and tasks, show server status and run queries. Extensions connect to storage, databases and formats including S3, HDFS, Azure, PostgreSQL, Avro, ORC and Parquet. Druid can be self-hosted on Linux, macOS and other Unix-like systems; Windows is not supported. The local quickstart needs at least 6 GiB of RAM and Java 17. Production security controls require configuration.

Apache Storm

Apache Storm is a distributed system for computing over unbounded data streams in real time. It uses spouts, bolts, and topologies to assemble multi-stage computations, supporting realtime analytics, online machine learning, continuous computation, distributed RPC, and ETL. The project describes Storm as scalable and fault-tolerant, with guaranteed data processing, and reports a benchmark above one million tuples per second per node. Integrations include Apache Kafka, HDFS, JDBC databases, JMS, and Redis. Developers can work in local mode in-process or submit topologies to a remote cluster. Storm supports stateful processing and lists JavaScript, Python, Ruby, and C# among supported languages. It is free under Apache License, Version 2.0; source and binary distributions are available, along with Maven Central and an official Docker image. The current release is 3.1.0. Security options include Kerberos/SASL authentication, SimpleACLAuthorizer authorization, and TLS for Thrift RPC and worker messaging; authentication and authorization options are disabled by default.
