| Deployment | Druid can run on commodity hardware in *NIX environments and is designed to run in AWS, GCP, Azure, and other cloud environments. | MariaDB Enterprise is described as production-grade open source that runs on premises or in the cloud, on servers or containers, and on HDDs or SSDs. |
| Intended workloads | The FAQ recommends considering Druid for user-facing applications, low-latency high-concurrency queries, instant data visibility, ad hoc exploration, and streaming data. | MariaDB says its analytics offering is for analytic workloads that have outgrown traditional databases and for interactive, ad hoc analysis of current data. |
| Purpose | Apache Druid is a high-performance real-time analytics database for sub-second queries on streaming and batch data at scale. | MariaDB Enterprise can be deployed as a columnar database for real-time analytics using distributed data and massively parallel processing to run interactive ad hoc queries on very large datasets with standard SQL. |
| Query performance | The project says Druid can execute OLAP queries in milliseconds over datasets with billions to trillions of rows. | The product page says a new hash join algorithm and ORDER BY pushdown provide up to 2× faster joins and 50× faster sorting. |
| Security | Security features include TLS, authentication, and authorization, but they are disabled by default and the documentation says to configure them for production. | The product page lists transparent data encryption in Enterprise Server and a database firewall in MaxScale. |
| Support | The project directs users to its community network for help using Druid. | Enterprise subscriptions include 24×7 technical support, and customers can add consulting services and a team of remote DBAs, enterprise architects, and migration managers. |

In their own words
Apache Druid
Apache Druid is a free, open-source analytics database for querying streaming and batch data. It is designed to return OLAP queries in milliseconds, including on high-cardinality datasets with billions to trillions of rows. The project describes applications ranging from hundreds to 100,000 queries per second. Native Apache Kafka and Amazon Kinesis integrations support low-latency ingestion and querying as data arrives. Druid organizes ingested data into columnar, time-indexed, encoded and compressed storage. Queries can use Druid SQL or JSON-over-HTTP, and joins are available during ingestion or at query time. Its web console can load data, manage datasources and tasks, show server status and run queries. Extensions connect to storage, databases and formats including S3, HDFS, Azure, PostgreSQL, Avro, ORC and Parquet. Druid can be self-hosted on Linux, macOS and other Unix-like systems; Windows is not supported. The local quickstart needs at least 6 GiB of RAM and Java 17. Production security controls require configuration.
