| Deployment | Druid can run on commodity hardware in *NIX environments and is designed to run in AWS, GCP, Azure, and other cloud environments. | Starburst Enterprise is self-hosted and can run on premises, in private or hybrid clouds, Kubernetes and major cloud marketplaces. |
| Integrations | Core extensions support systems and formats including S3, HDFS, Google Cloud Storage, Azure, Kafka, Kinesis, Avro, ORC, Parquet, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. | The platform connects to more than 50 sources, including Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Hive, Amazon S3, Snowflake, and PostgreSQL. |
| Security | Security features include TLS, authentication, and authorization, but they are disabled by default and the documentation says to configure them for production. | Enterprise security includes column- and row-level RBAC and ABAC, Apache Ranger, HashiCorp Vault, Okta, LDAP, dynamic masking, column-level encryption, and unified audit logging. |
| Support | The project directs users to its community network for help using Druid. | Enterprise support tiers range from five portal tickets monthly to unlimited tickets and dedicated experts; Sev-1 response targets range from one hour to 30 minutes. |
| What it does | Apache Druid is a real-time analytics database for sub-second queries on streaming and batch data at scale. | The Enterprise Context Layer packages scattered data into governed, versioned data products containing business definitions, access policy and lineage for analysts, applications and AI. |

In their own words
Apache Druid
Apache Druid is a free, open-source analytics database for querying streaming and batch data. It is designed to return OLAP queries in milliseconds, including on high-cardinality datasets with billions to trillions of rows. The project describes applications ranging from hundreds to 100,000 queries per second. Native Apache Kafka and Amazon Kinesis integrations support low-latency ingestion and querying as data arrives. Druid organizes ingested data into columnar, time-indexed, encoded and compressed storage. Queries can use Druid SQL or JSON-over-HTTP, and joins are available during ingestion or at query time. Its web console can load data, manage datasources and tasks, show server status and run queries. Extensions connect to storage, databases and formats including S3, HDFS, Azure, PostgreSQL, Avro, ORC and Parquet. Druid can be self-hosted on Linux, macOS and other Unix-like systems; Windows is not supported. The local quickstart needs at least 6 GiB of RAM and Java 17. Production security controls require configuration.
Starburst Enterprise Context Layer
Starburst Enterprise Context Layer turns scattered data into governed, versioned Data Products. Each product combines a dataset with business definitions, ownership, access policies, and lineage, and appears in a shared catalog. Controls include role-based access, column masking, and row-level security. Teams can define products in YAML, commit them to git, test changes before merging, and roll back; breaking changes are reviewed before rollout. Automated CI/CD lineage checks verify upstream freshness before a new version is published. A semantic layer turns raw data into business-ready metrics, dimensions, and relationships for BI tools and AI agents. Products can be consumed through JDBC or REST, and the platform connects to more than 50 sources, including Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Hive, Amazon S3, Snowflake, and PostgreSQL. It runs in private cloud, hybrid, or on-premises environments and is air-gap ready. The free plan is free.
