| Authentication | HiveServer2 supports unauthenticated modes plus Kerberos, LDAP, PAM and pluggable custom authentication. | The product supports single sign-on through identity providers such as Google, Microsoft, and Okta, and supports Google SSO through OAuth 2.0. |
| Integrations | The project site names Spark, Presto, and Impala as integrations; it also describes Apache Ranger for authorization and Apache Atlas for lineage and governance. | Query says it supports more than 50 federated sources, including Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, CrowdStrike Falcon, Okta, Snowflake, and Google BigQuery. |
| Security | The site describes Kerberos authentication, fine-grained access control, and audit logging; HiveServer2 documentation also lists LDAP, PAM, and custom authentication options. | Query says its product design follows a “secure by design” principle and that it has an active bug bounty policy. |

In their own words
Apache Hive
Apache Hive is a distributed data warehouse system for reading, writing, and managing large datasets with SQL. Its Metastore keeps shared metadata for tables and partitions and serves clients including Hive, Impala, and Spark; HiveServer2 supports concurrent clients through JDBC and ODBC. Hive provides full ACID transactions for ORC tables and insert-only transactions for other formats. Documented storage options include S3, Azure Data Lake, and Google Cloud Storage, and Hive supports Apache Iceberg tables through a StorageHandler. Named integrations include Spark, Presto, and Impala, with Apache Ranger for authorization and Apache Atlas for lineage and governance. Security options described by the project include Kerberos, fine-grained access control, and audit logging; HiveServer2 also lists LDAP, PAM, and custom authentication. The quickstart includes Docker instructions for the server and Metastore. Hive is free open-source software. The installation manual lists Java 8, Maven 3.6.3, Protobuf 2.5, Hadoop 3.3.6, and Tez among current prerequisites; Hive 4.2.x instead requires JDK 21 minimum and works with Hadoop 3.4.1 and Tez 0.10.5.
Query
Query is a cloud security data mesh that searches distributed security sources without copying their data into a central store. Federated search queries connected systems in parallel and normalizes results to OCSF, while Federated Search Query Language translates general queries into each source’s native language at query time. Query Workers are AI agents that triage, investigate, hunt, and detect across connected sources; analysts review recommendations or inconclusive findings. Federated Detections run SPL, KQL, or Sigma rules where the data resides. Query says it supports more than 50 sources, including Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, CrowdStrike Falcon, Okta, Snowflake, and Google BigQuery. Static connectors map fixed schemas; dynamic connectors let customers configure custom mappings. Access is read-only, with no ingestion required and data staying at its source. The SaaS product runs on AWS data centers in us-east-1. Single sign-on supports Google, Microsoft, and Okta providers. Query states SOC 2 certification, uses NIST CSF 800-53 as a control baseline, and offers weekday standard support plus paid Platinum support.
