| Integrations | Listed integrations include PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, MongoDB, Neo4j, Kafka, Cassandra, Salesforce, SAP, Parquet, Avro, S3, Azure Blob, Google Cloud Storage, REST and SFTP. | The product page says the Semantic Layer offers an API, the dbt MCP Server, and dozens of out-of-the-box integrations for BI, notebooks, spreadsheets, embedded analytics, and AI systems. |
| Licence | Apache Hop is released under the Apache License 2.0. | The dbt Semantic Layer service and APIs are proprietary cloud software; MetricFlow and dbt-semantic-interfaces are Apache 2.0 licensed. |
| Purpose | Apache Hop is an open source platform for data integration and orchestration, with visual pipelines and workflows. | The Semantic Layer centralizes metric definitions on dbt models and automatically handles data joins for consistent use across downstream tools and applications. |
| Support | Community support is volunteer-based and free, but the project says it cannot promise response times; commercial providers offer services such as SLAs, training, and migration. | The pricing page lists 24x5 support for Starter and priority support with SLAs for Enterprise. |
| What it does | Apache Hop is a metadata-driven platform for visual data integration, engineering and orchestration using pipelines and workflows. | The Semantic Layer centralizes metric definitions in dbt and generates queries with joins for downstream tools. |

In their own words
Apache Hop
Apache Hop is an open-source platform for data integration and orchestration. Its visual canvas lets users assemble pipelines, preview rows at individual steps, and watch live data and metrics during execution. A pipeline can run locally, on Hop Server, on Apache Spark, or on Flink and Dataflow through Apache Beam. Hop includes more than 250 pipeline transforms, more than 80 workflow actions, and support for over 40 database dialects. Listed connections include PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, Snowflake, BigQuery, Kafka, Salesforce, SAP, S3, REST, and SFTP. Teams can switch environments when moving projects from development to production and keep credentials outside pipeline definitions. Apache Hop is free under the Apache License 2.0. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows; Hop Web works in modern browsers. Release 2.19.0 requires Java 21. Docker images and a Kubernetes Helm chart are available; Hop Web is work in progress and provided as-is.
dbt Semantic Layer
The dbt Semantic Layer centralizes metric definitions on dbt models and handles joins so downstream tools and applications can use metrics consistently. MetricFlow generates SQL at query time from semantic model and metric configurations. Teams define those models and metrics in YAML as version-controlled, lineage-aware code. MetricFlow can optimize joins, rewrite queries to reduce compute and latency, and cache repeated queries. The product offers an API, the dbt MCP Server and integrations for BI tools, notebooks, spreadsheets, embedded analytics and AI systems. GraphQL and JDBC APIs and a Python SDK provide ways to query metrics and dimensions; Claude and ChatGPT can connect to governed metrics through the MCP server. Documented warehouse platforms include Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks and Redshift. Defining and querying metrics requires a dbt Starter or Enterprise-tier account, and single-tenant accounts need account-representative setup and enablement. Starter includes 5,000 queried metrics per month; Enterprise and Enterprise+ each include 20,000. Starter costs $100 a month per user. The free Developer plan does not list the Semantic Layer.
