| Integrations | Kafka Connect integrates with hundreds of event sources and sinks; the homepage names Postgres, JMS, Elasticsearch, and AWS S3 as examples. | Included sink connectors support Astra DB and Cassandra, Kafka, AWS Kinesis, Cloud Storage, Elasticsearch, BigQuery, JDBC databases, and Snowflake. |
| Security | The project describes Kafka as secure; the ASF directs vulnerability reports to its security page. | Shared tenants use Pulsar authentication and authorization alongside Astra organization RBAC, with tenant-scoped roles and permissions. |
| Support | The Apache Software Foundation says it does not provide formal or commercial support for its software packages. | The documentation directs customers to IBM Support for requests such as private connectivity and unavailable regions. |
| Use cases | The project lists messaging, website activity tracking, metrics, log aggregation, stream processing, event sourcing, and commit logs as Kafka use cases. | The service provides unified messaging for streaming, pub/sub, and queuing, and supports real-time event processing and change data capture. |

In their own words
Apache Kafka
Apache Kafka is an open-source distributed event-streaming platform for data pipelines, streaming analytics, data integration, and mission-critical applications. Applications can publish and subscribe to event streams, retain them durably, and process them either in real time or later. Kafka supports durable, fault-tolerant replication across availability zones, data centers, or geographic regions. Kafka Streams provides stateful operations, aggregations, windowing, joins, event-time processing, and exactly-once processing. Kafka Connect links hundreds of event sources and sinks, including Postgres, JMS, Elasticsearch, and AWS S3. Deployments can use bare metal, virtual machines, or containers, on premises or in the cloud, with self-managed or vendor-managed options. The project describes network-limited throughput, latency as low as 2 ms, and clusters of up to 1,000 brokers. Kafka is self-hosted, free, and open source under Apache License 2.0. A local quickstart requires Java 17 or later.
DataStax Astra Streaming
DataStax Astra Streaming is a managed cloud service for streaming data and processing event streams, powered by Apache Pulsar. It provides messaging for streaming, publish-subscribe workflows, and queuing, and supports real-time event processing and change data capture. Users manage Pulsar tenants and resources such as topics, connectors, functions, and subscriptions through the Astra Portal, APIs, or related tools. Applications connect through open-source Apache Pulsar client APIs; the service runs Pulsar 3.1 and recommends that API version or higher. Included connectors cover Astra DB and Cassandra, Kafka, AWS Kinesis, Cloud Storage, Elasticsearch, BigQuery, JDBC databases, Snowflake, and selected source systems including Debezium-supported databases. Connections use authentication, authorization, and TLS. Shared clusters have defined tenant, namespace, topic, message-size, and throughput limits. Custom source and sink connectors are not supported, and experimental connectors are not fully supported or tested. A free tier is listed at free; paid pricing is usage-based and varies by region and usage.
