DeploymentKafka can run on bare-metal hardware, virtual machines, or containers, on premises or in the cloud, with self-managed or vendor-managed service options.Deployment choices include shared public infrastructure, dedicated private data planes and bring-your-own-cloud environments.
Founded1999Estuary says it was founded in 2019.
IntegrationsKafka Connect integrates with hundreds of event sources and sinks; the homepage names Postgres, JMS, Elasticsearch, and AWS S3 as examples.Estuary advertises more than 200 prebuilt connectors across databases, warehouses, SaaS apps, and cloud platforms, including Snowflake, BigQuery, Kafka, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.
SecurityThe project describes Kafka as secure; the ASF directs vulnerability reports to its security page.Official documentation states encryption in transit and at rest, immutable infrastructure, a zero-trust network model and role-based access control.
SupportThe Apache Software Foundation says it does not provide formal or commercial support for its software packages. The Cloud plan includes standard support through community Slack and email; Enterprise includes dedicated Slack and email support.
What it doesApache Kafka is an open-source distributed event streaming platform for data pipelines, streaming analytics, data integration, and mission-critical applications.Estuary is a right-time data platform that captures data once and delivers it to warehouses, operational systems, applications and AI workflows using CDC, streaming, ETL/ELT and scheduled movement.

In their own words

Apache Kafka

Apache Kafka is an open-source distributed event-streaming platform for data pipelines, streaming analytics, data integration, and mission-critical applications. Applications can publish and subscribe to event streams, retain them durably, and process them either in real time or later. Kafka supports durable, fault-tolerant replication across availability zones, data centers, or geographic regions. Kafka Streams provides stateful operations, aggregations, windowing, joins, event-time processing, and exactly-once processing. Kafka Connect links hundreds of event sources and sinks, including Postgres, JMS, Elasticsearch, and AWS S3. Deployments can use bare metal, virtual machines, or containers, on premises or in the cloud, with self-managed or vendor-managed options. The project describes network-limited throughput, latency as low as 2 ms, and clusters of up to 1,000 brokers. Kafka is self-hosted, free, and open source under Apache License 2.0. A local quickstart requires Java 17 or later.

Estuary

Estuary is a managed data integration platform for combining change data capture, batch, streaming, and app synchronization for analytics, operations, and AI. It supports transformations while data is moving, using SQL, Python, or TypeScript, and describes delivery as exactly once with end-to-end latency under 100 milliseconds. More than 200 prebuilt connectors cover databases, warehouses, SaaS apps, and cloud platforms, including Snowflake, BigQuery, Kafka, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. Customers can store data in their own cloud bucket for a duration they choose, and select public, private, or Bring Your Own Cloud deployment. Estuary lists SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, HITECH, CCPA, and GDPR among its compliance standards, and says data is encrypted in transit and at rest. It is available through API, self-hosted, and web options. The indefinite free tier is limited to 10 GB per month and two concurrent connector instances; paid plans start at $100 a month.
