In their own words

Apache Kafka

Apache Kafka is an open-source distributed event-streaming platform for data pipelines, streaming analytics, data integration, and mission-critical applications. Applications can publish and subscribe to event streams, retain them durably, and process them either in real time or later. Kafka supports durable, fault-tolerant replication across availability zones, data centers, or geographic regions. Kafka Streams provides stateful operations, aggregations, windowing, joins, event-time processing, and exactly-once processing. Kafka Connect links hundreds of event sources and sinks, including Postgres, JMS, Elasticsearch, and AWS S3. Deployments can use bare metal, virtual machines, or containers, on premises or in the cloud, with self-managed or vendor-managed options. The project describes network-limited throughput, latency as low as 2 ms, and clusters of up to 1,000 brokers. Kafka is self-hosted, free, and open source under Apache License 2.0. A local quickstart requires Java 17 or later.

Tinybird Cloud

Tinybird Cloud is a managed real-time data platform for building analytics features and serving data through APIs. It runs managed ClickHouse with automatic version upgrades, autoscaling, and vertically scalable clusters; Enterprise also lists horizontal scaling and cluster management. Data can arrive over HTTP, Kafka, S3, GCS, or local files, with buffering, compaction, schema detection, and retries. SQL queries can become secure APIs, and the native ClickHouse HTTP interface is supported. Listed integrations include Confluent, Redpanda, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Apache Iceberg. Developers can use the Tinybird CLI, TypeScript SDK, or Python SDK, with local development, branches, and CI/CD integration. The Free plan includes 0.25 vCPUs, one thread per request, 1,000 requests per day, 10GB storage, and community support. The Developer plan costs $49 a month and includes 0.5 vCPUs and 25GB storage. Tinybird lists paid pricing from $25/mo; SaaS and Enterprise pricing is custom. It states GDPR, SOC 2 Type 2, and HIPAA compliance, TLS 1.2-or-later connections, encryption at rest, and daily backups with two-day retention.
