PurposeApache Maven is a build tool for Java projects that uses a project object model (POM) to manage compilation, testing, and documentation.CodeBuild is a fully managed continuous integration service that runs build scripts to compile, test, and package code.
SecurityMaven's security model assumes users trust the POM, code, dependencies, and repositories used in a build; users building untrusted code must provide isolation.CodeBuild integrates with AWS IAM for granular access controls, and build artifacts are encrypted with AWS KMS managed keys or customer managed keys.

In their own words

Apache Maven

Apache Maven is a free build tool for Java projects. It uses a project object model, or POM, and plugins to manage compilation, testing and documentation through a uniform build system. Maven manages dependencies, including transitive dependencies and automatic updates, and can download them from a central repository. Project metadata can produce outputs such as JARs, WARs and distributions. Maven can also generate project information, including changelogs, cross-referenced sources, dependency lists and unit test reports. Java or scripting-language plugins extend it, and it can work with source control systems such as Subversion or Git to manage tag-based releases. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Maven 3.10 and later requires JDK 8 or above to execute, while toolchains can target other JDK versions. Its project layout is opinionated, so projects with unusual structures that cannot be reorganized may have to give up some Maven features or Maven itself. The software is distributed under Apache License 2.0; its listed plan costs nothing.

AWS CodeBuild

AWS CodeBuild is a paid, cloud-hosted continuous integration service for compiling, testing, and packaging code from build scripts. It provisions and scales build capacity automatically, so projects do not require users to manage build servers. Preconfigured environments cover Java, Python, Node.js, Ruby, Go, Android, .NET Core for Linux, and Docker; teams can also supply Docker-based environments. A YAML build specification defines commands for each build phase and other settings. Builds can start from CodeCommit, GitHub, GitHub Enterprise, Bitbucket, Amazon S3, or CodePipeline, and can work with Jenkins. Artifacts can be stored in S3 or sent to an artifact repository. IAM provides access controls, while KMS keys encrypt artifacts. Build timing, status, commit ID, metrics, and logs are available through the service and CloudWatch, with SNS event notifications. A free plan provides stated monthly allowances; paid usage starts at 0.01 USD and can add charges for data transfer and related AWS services.
