In their own words
Apache Paimon
Apache Paimon is a lake format for realtime lakehouse architectures, supporting streaming and batch operations with Flink and Spark. Primary-key tables handle large-scale streaming updates through configurable merge engines, including deduplication, partial updates, aggregation, and first-row updates. Append tables support batch and streaming processing, small-file merging, and compaction with Z-order sorting. Paimon also provides ACID transactions, time travel, schema evolution, and metadata for petabyte-scale datasets and many partitions. Listed integrations include Flink, Spark, Hive, Trino, Presto, StarRocks, and Doris, though supported operations vary by engine and version. Documented CDC sources include MySQL, PostgreSQL, Kafka, MongoDB, and Pulsar. Other capabilities include blob and vector storage, full-text search, and global indexing. PyPaimon provides catalog, table, Arrow, and pandas APIs plus a command-line tool; core reads and writes do not require a JVM or a running Flink or Spark cluster. It is free at free, with users choosing connectors and storage plugins for their environment.
DataChain
DataChain is a Python library and context layer for organizing unstructured data for researchers and AI agents. It converts files from Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage, local filesystems, and Hugging Face into typed, versioned datasets that can be queried. Its Dataset DB uses Pydantic schemas, versioning, and file references, while the Knowledge Base stores summaries, statistics, lineage, and code. Parallel Python pipelines can run locally or across distributed workers with asynchronous I/O and automatic checkpoints. An agent harness connects Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex through a local skill or Studio MCP. DataChain Studio adds job tracking, dataset management, experiment tracking, a model registry, team collaboration, a REST API, and GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket connections. Compute can run in a customer VPC, and on-premises deployment, role-based access, audit logs, and SSO/SAML are supported. The Open Source plan is free for one developer using local compute and millions of records. Teams costs what you agree with the maker and supports up to five users; Enterprise pricing is custom.
