| Deployment | RocketMQ 5.x separates stateless Proxy from storage and compute so those layers can scale independently. | The self-managed broker can run on private, hybrid, and public clouds, with pre-built images for Kubernetes, OpenShift, and DC/OS. |
| Reliability | The project lists built-in fault tolerance and high-availability options, durable persistence, replication, failover, and cross-region disaster recovery. | Features include persistent messaging stored to disk, offline message queuing, and QoS support. |
| Scale | The project site describes million-level LiteTopics per cluster and says RocketMQ has demonstrated 10M+ TPS throughput. | The maker describes the broker as scaling to millions of connections and billions of messages. |
| Security | RocketMQ provides ACL and TLS, but operators must configure ACL or restrict access to trusted networks; the security guide warns that ACL is not enabled by default. | The broker page lists TLS 1.2/1.3, mutual TLS, fine-grained access control, pluggable authentication such as OAuth 2.0 and LDAP, and audit logging. |
| Support | The site links to community email groups, GitHub issues, and contribution guidance for help and participation. | The maker offers Community, Silver, Gold, and Platinum support options; Gold and Platinum support are available up to 24×7. |

In their own words
Apache RocketMQ
Apache RocketMQ is distributed middleware for asynchronous communication and publish/subscribe messaging. Its asynchronous model can separate systems and shift loads between upstream and downstream services. Messaging options include publish/subscribe, request/reply, streaming, transactional messages, FIFO ordering, filtering, and push or pull consumption. The project lists durable persistence, replication, failover, fault tolerance, high-availability options, and cross-region disaster recovery. Its site describes million-level LiteTopics per cluster and says RocketMQ has demonstrated 10M+ TPS throughput. It can run locally, in Docker, or Kubernetes, with source and binary packages available. The ecosystem includes EventBridge, MQTT, RocketMQ Connect, RocketMQ Streams, Spring, Flink, Prometheus Exporter, and a Kubernetes Operator; AI options include native MCP support, A2A compatibility, and integrations with LangChain, CrewAI, AutoGen, AgentScope, Dify, and Coze. The project lists gRPC SDKs for Java, Go, Python, C++, and Rust, plus gRPC, MQTT, JMS, and OpenMessaging protocols. It is free under Apache License 2.0. ACL is not enabled by default.
HiveMQ MQTT Broker
HiveMQ MQTT Broker provides event-driven messaging between connected devices and enterprise systems. It supports MQTT 3.1.1 and MQTT 5.0, with persistent messages stored to disk, offline queuing, and quality-of-service support. Dynamic clustering lets operators add or remove broker nodes while the cluster runs. Extensions connect to streaming services, databases, data warehouses, and security services, with Kafka, Amazon Kinesis, and Google Pub/Sub listed as examples. Security options include TLS 1.2/1.3, mutual TLS, fine-grained access controls, pluggable authentication such as OAuth 2.0 and LDAP, and audit logging. The self-managed broker can run on private, hybrid, and public clouds, with images for Kubernetes, OpenShift, and DC/OS. In evaluation mode without a valid license, it supports up to 25 client connections. HiveMQ describes the broker as intended for large-scale IoT deployments and mission-critical enterprise operations. Plans include a free option; Launch is $299 a month and Run is $499 a month. Other listed plans have no price listed.
