Overview

Apidog is an API workspace for teams that want design, debugging, mock responses, testing, and documentation tied to API specifications. It suits teams working across those stages; its breadth is a strong fit when a shared specification should guide both requests and validation, but database-operation limits and plan costs deserve a close look.

Specification-driven work is the product’s clearest advantage: it can derive request content and mock data from a specification, then validate responses against it. Apidog also supports GraphQL and SOAP, scheduled runs, contract testing, and a mock server, giving API teams a broad workflow without limiting the product to a request client.

Key features

Specifications, requests, and tests

Apidog can generate request parameters and body content from API specifications, as well as mock data. Response validation against those specifications helps keep implementation checks connected to the intended API contract. For teams managing specifications alongside testing, that integration is more compelling than a collection of disconnected tools; teams seeking only a lightweight request client may find the wider scope unnecessary.

Visual test orchestration lets users sequence requests, add assertions, extract variables, and save requests as endpoint cases. Scheduled runs and contract testing extend this beyond ad hoc checks. The CLI integrates with Jenkins, GitHub, and GitLab, while activity notifications can go to Slack or webhook-compatible tools. Those connections make it a plausible fit for teams incorporating API checks into delivery workflows.

Migration, databases, and deployment

Postman data import and Postman script support can ease a move from Postman, although they do not by themselves establish that every workflow will transfer unchanged. Database operations cover MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Oracle on Free; ClickHouse, MongoDB, and Redis are available on paid tiers. The visual database interface supports standard SQL, not complex operations such as stored procedures, so it is not a substitute for a full database administration environment.

Apidog offers Global and Europe SaaS services and an on-premises option hosted on customer servers. It says it uses AWS hosting, access controls, and encryption, including TLS 1.3 for data in transit. Its desktop client sends requests directly from the user’s computer to the target server rather than routing them through Apidog servers. These choices may suit teams with differing deployment and request-privacy needs.

Pricing

Apidog has a free plan, paid plans, and a 14-day trial. The Free plan is 0.00 USD per free, time-unlimited, and capped at four users. It includes database operations for MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Oracle; that makes it a useful starting point for small teams, but the seat cap and paid-only support for ClickHouse, MongoDB, and Redis can constrain growth.

Basic costs 12.00 USD per month and includes 20 team projects. It is the straightforward step up for teams that need more room for shared projects, though the listed plan terms do not establish a larger seat allowance. Professional costs 24.00 USD per month and adds advanced control and priority support, making it more relevant when those capabilities matter than for teams seeking only additional project capacity.

Enterprise is shown at 27.00 USD per year, billed annually with the price shown per month. It includes SSO, compliance features, 24/7 support, and the on-premises edition, positioning it for organizations that need those controls or deployment choice. The stated annual price term matters when comparing it with monthly subscriptions. The general paid-from note gives $9/user/mo (annual); plan prices and terms should be compared carefully rather than treated as interchangeable.

Platforms

Apidog supports API, extension, Linux, macOS, web, Windows, and self-hosted use. The range accommodates browser-based and desktop work as well as customer-hosted deployment; the best fit depends on whether a team prefers SaaS or requires its own hosting environment.

Who it's for

Apidog is best suited to API teams that want specification-led design, mock generation, request testing, and documentation in one workflow, especially when they also need visual test automation or CI/CD integration. Its free tier is a sensible fit for a team of up to four users evaluating that workflow. Teams with larger databases, complex SQL procedures, or needs limited to a simple client should weigh the paid-tier boundaries and broader platform scope.

Pros and cons

Strength: Specifications can drive request generation, mock data, and response validation, linking design artifacts to testing.
Strength: Visual request sequences, assertions, variable extraction, scheduled runs, and CI/CD integrations support repeatable API checks.
Strength: SaaS and on-premises deployment, plus direct desktop requests to target servers, offer useful deployment and privacy choices.
Limitation: The free plan is limited to four users, and ClickHouse, MongoDB, and Redis database operations require a paid tier.
Limitation: The visual database interface handles standard SQL but not complex operations such as stored procedures.
Limitation: Basic’s 20-project allowance and Professional’s advanced-control and priority-support additions mean readers should match the tier to their specific team needs.

Alternatives

For API design, client, and testing comparisons, see API Design Tools, API clients, and API Testing Tools.

Postman is a relevant alternative for teams that want its freemium API client and core tools, specs, mock servers, Native Git, and Collection Runner. Pact is worth considering when open-source tooling is the priority. Bruno may suit teams looking for an open-source option with a Pro tier at 6.00 USD per month billed annually. Insomnia offers a free Essentials plan with three users for Git Sync projects and 1,000 mock-server requests per month, a fit for teams whose needs fit those caps. Kreya is an alternative with a free plan for individuals and request history limited to the latest request. Hoppscotch offers a free plan for REST, GraphQL, and realtime API testing with a personal workspace. Parasoft SOAtest uses tailored pricing based on business needs and is available by quote. Karate is an alternative free framework for REST, GraphQL, and SOAP API testing, with browser and desktop UI automation and Gatling performance testing.

Verdict

Choose Apidog if your team wants one specification-driven workspace for API design, mocks, automated tests, and documentation, with deployment options that include on-premises hosting. Look elsewhere if your team needs complex database operations or a narrower client workflow, and compare the user cap and paid-tier terms before committing.
