Overview

ApolloOne is a Mac photo and video viewer for photographers who want to review and cull images without moving camera RAW files into a proprietary database. Its mix of metadata search, focus-point inspection and GPS editing makes it more than a basic viewer, though its most useful batch workflows sit in Pro.

It is a strong fit for photographers managing files in their own folders; it is less suitable for anyone who needs a cross-platform tool or expects a full image-editing suite.

Key features

File-based browsing lets users cull without a separate RAW-file database. RAW support, contact sheets and side-by-side comparison make it practical for reviewing a shoot, while color management and a metadata viewer cover common inspection needs.

Metadata and search: EXIF tools manage keywords and metadata in files. Search can use those fields and supports optional regular expressions, which helps when a collection has consistent naming or tagging conventions.
Focus inspection: Camera autofocus points can be overlaid on an image for inspection at 100% magnification. That is a targeted aid for checking focus, not a replacement for broader image-editing tools.
GPS editing: Interactive Apple and Google Maps support location browsing, and users can change GPS data by dragging and dropping. This is useful for correcting location records without leaving the viewer.
Pro batch workflow: Pro adds batch resizing and format conversion, batch export including RAW-to-JPEG conversion, and memory-card import with Auto Resume. Photographers who regularly process groups of images will get more from these tools than occasional viewers.
Other workflow details: Slideshows can use music from iTunes playlists, and ApolloOne can work with an external image editor of the user's choice.

Pricing

ApolloOne has a free version and paid Standard and Pro editions, offered as subscriptions or perpetual licenses. The free version is free and is available indefinitely, with a purchase reminder after 14 days. It suits basic viewing and evaluation, but buyers needing a paid edition's features should check the edition before choosing a license.

1-Year Standard Subscription: 14.99 USD per year, billed 1 year, with Standard Edition features. This is the lowest-cost paid option for users who want Standard without paying for Pro's batch workflow.
1-Year Pro Subscription: 23.99 USD per year, billed 1 year, with Pro Edition features. It fits users who want the card-import and batch tools on a subscription.
Pro Edition perpetual upgrade: 23.99 USD per once, an upgrade to Pro Edition. This is for existing owners upgrading rather than a standalone Pro purchase.
Standard Edition perpetual license: 35.99 USD per once, including EXIF, Makernotes and XMP/IPTC editing, batch operations, batch rename and cropping. It is a one-time option for users whose needs fit Standard's specified tools.
Pro Edition perpetual license: 59.99 USD per once, with Pro Edition features. It suits users who prefer a one-time purchase and need Pro.

The pricing note also describes a 14-day trial; the free version itself remains available indefinitely. No seat or usage quota is specified for these plans.

Platforms

ApolloOne is available only for macOS, and the App Store listing requires macOS 12.0 or later. It is not an option for photographers who need to use the same viewer on Windows or Linux.

Who it's for

ApolloOne makes sense for Mac photographers who want folder-based RAW culling, searchable metadata and practical inspection tools in one viewer. It is particularly relevant to users who need to correct GPS data or inspect autofocus points, and Pro is the more suitable edition for repeated batch exports, conversions or memory-card imports. Choose another tool if Windows or Linux support is essential.

Pros and cons

Pro: Browsing and culling do not require importing camera RAW files into a proprietary database, preserving a file-based workflow.
Pro: Metadata search, optional regular expressions, AF-point overlays and drag-and-drop GPS editing address distinct photo-review tasks rather than just display.
Pro: Pro's batch export, conversion and resumable card import can streamline repeated shoot processing.
Con: The app is Mac-only and requires macOS 12.0 or later, ruling it out for other desktop platforms.
Con: Pro's batch workflow requires a Pro plan; the cheaper Standard subscription does not include Pro Edition features.

Alternatives

Photo Viewer Software is a useful starting point for comparing the category. Consider ImageGlass if broad platform coverage matters: it runs on Linux, macOS and Windows and has a free GPLv3 Classic plan.

Pictureflect Photo Viewer is a Windows-only option with a free version for browsing, common and RAW formats, and basic image operations. For batch conversion across Linux, macOS or Windows, XnConvert has a free plan for private, educational and non-profit use, though it has no free trial.

Pineapple Pictures is a free, MIT-licensed viewer for Linux, macOS and Windows, with experimental additional format support available through a paid itch.io purchase. Geeqie and nomacs are free alternatives for users who prefer open software; Geeqie is GPLv2, while nomacs is GPLv3 and free for private and commercial use.

Photo Mechanic is another paid Mac and Windows option, starting at 14.99 USD per month for a single user on up to 2 computers, with updates and support while subscribed. FastStone Image Viewer is a Windows alternative with free personal and educational use and a commercial lifetime license.

Verdict

Choose ApolloOne if you are a Mac photographer who wants to cull RAW files in place and values metadata, focus-point and GPS tools alongside viewing. Its central advantage is a focused, file-based review workflow with meaningful Pro batch features; look elsewhere if you need Windows or Linux support.
