Overview

AppCheck pairs CARB, a context-aware engine that detects ransomware behavior, with Shelter, which temporarily backs up protected files for restoration if they are damaged. That gives it a recovery layer alongside detection, a useful distinction for readers concerned about the damage an attack can do even when prevention fails. CheckMAL says CARB detects more than 3,000 new or variant ransomware attacks; that figure is the maker’s claim, not a guarantee of detection.

The product is compatible with common antivirus products and can back up to local disks or network drives, so it can complement existing antivirus protection. CheckMAL was established in April 2016.

Key features

Behavior-based detection: CARB looks for ransomware behavior in context, positioning AppCheck to address new or variant threats rather than focusing only on known attacks.
File restoration: Shelter temporarily backs up protected files and can restore them when damaged. This is a practical safeguard, though it is not a substitute for a separate backup strategy.
Pro detection and protection: Pro adds ghost and smart detection, plus protection for network drives and SMB shared folders. These additions matter most in environments where files are shared across machines.
Scheduled backup: Pro can schedule backups to external disks or NAS, a more controlled option for users who want recurring copies beyond Shelter’s temporary file protection.
Support: Pro includes premium technical support by phone and remote support, a useful extra for business deployments.

Pricing

AppCheck is freemium, with a free plan for individual users only. That makes it a no-cost way for personal users to access the core product, but the license restriction rules it out for corporate use. A 15-day trial is available for AppCheck Pro for Windows Server.

Plan	Price	Seats and term
AppCheck	Free	Individual users only
AppCheck Pro — 1 PC / 1Year	24.99 USD per year	1 PC · 1 year
AppCheck Pro — 3 PC / 1Year	34.99 USD per year	3 PC · 1 year
AppCheck Pro — 1 PC / 2Year	39.99 USD per year	1 PC · 2 years
AppCheck Pro — 5 PC / 1Year	49.99 USD per year	5 PC · 1 year
AppCheck Pro — 3 PC / 2Year	59.99 USD per year	3 PC · 2 years
AppCheck Pro — 5 PC / 2Year	89.99 USD per year	5 PC · 2 years

The one-PC, one-year license suits a single paid user; the three- and five-PC options suit households or small teams that need multiple Windows seats. Two-year packages reduce the frequency of renewal but commit the seat count for longer. Pro is the route to shared-folder protection and scheduled backup; those who only need individual use can start with the free plan.

Platforms

AppCheck and AppCheck Pro support Windows 7 SP1, 8, 8.1, 10 and 11 in 32-bit and 64-bit editions. AppCheck Pro for Linux Server supports CentOS 6 or later, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 or later, Rocky 8 or later, and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS through 24.04 LTS. The Linux offering is explicitly a Pro server product, rather than a general desktop edition.

The product’s desktop support is Windows-only, so users seeking a ransomware tool for macOS, Android or iOS should look elsewhere. Pro for Windows Server has a 15-day trial.

Who it's for

AppCheck’s free edition is appropriate for individual Windows users who want a focused ransomware layer and file restoration without a subscription. Pro is better suited to personal users with several PCs or organizations that need shared-folder defense, scheduled backups, Linux server coverage or premium support. The product is less compelling for users who want one tool covering several desktop operating systems.

Pros and cons

Pro: Detection and file restoration are combined, addressing both threat identification and damaged files.
Pro: Pro protects network drives and SMB shared folders and adds scheduled external-disk or NAS backups, useful for shared and server-oriented environments.
Pro: The free individual license and multiple paid seat-and-term choices give personal users a low-cost starting point and room to cover more PCs.
Con: The free license is restricted to individual users, so organizations must budget for Pro.
Con: Desktop support is limited to Windows; Linux support is for Pro server distributions rather than Linux desktops.

Verdict

Choose AppCheck if you want focused Windows ransomware detection paired with file restoration, or Pro’s shared-folder and scheduled-backup features for a small organization. Its individual-only free license is a useful entry point, but organizations need Pro, and users who need desktop coverage beyond Windows should choose another product.
