Overview

Upload a PDF, EPUB, plain-text file, or scanned pages to create AI-narrated MP3 audio. Automatic chapter detection can skip tables of contents, copyright sections, and indexes, which helps keep book audio organized rather than carrying front and back matter into the narration. OCR support for scanned PDFs and JPG or PNG page photos also makes the service useful for print material without machine-readable text.

Users retain rights to uploaded books and generated audio, granting a limited license only to process files for audio generation. The site says its ACX-ready output can be published to Audible, Apple Books, Google Play, Spotify, and Findaway.

Key features

Voice and pronunciation controls

The catalog includes 66 AI voices across eight languages. Voice cloning starts from a 10-second sample and supports any accent or language, offering authors a route to more personal narration. The Free plan includes one clone trial; Pro allows up to four clones. A reusable pronunciation dictionary applies word replacements across chapters, a useful safeguard for recurring names and specialist terms.

Book structure and output

Chapter detection and the ability to skip common non-narrative sections are practical advantages for book-length conversion. ACX output is processed as 44.1 kHz, 192 kbps CBR mono audio, with loudness normalized to -23 LUFS. That specific production profile gives authors a defined target for audiobook distribution; readers who only want occasional spoken text may not need that level of output specification.

Pro adds M4B chaptered downloads and watermarked video export. Studio and Lifetime include unwatermarked video export, YouTube-ready 4K video, background music, and custom thumbnails. These video tools matter chiefly to creators repurposing narration, not to listeners seeking audio alone.

Pricing

AudioBookByMe is freemium, with paid plans from $19.99/mo. The free tier is free, billed $0 forever, and allows one audiobook conversion per month, 66 voices in eight languages, one free voice-clone trial, and watermarked MP3 downloads. A brief spoken watermark and the one-book cap make it suitable for evaluating the workflow, not for clean output or regular production.

Pro costs 19.99 USD per month, billed $19.99/month. It raises the allowance to three books per month, removes the time limit, permits up to four voice clones, and adds M4B chaptered downloads, the pronunciation dictionary, and watermarked video export. This is the sensible tier for an individual author producing a few books monthly; the cap still rules it out for a heavier release schedule.

Studio costs 39.99 USD per month, billed $39.99/month. Its 10-book monthly allowance and unwatermarked video features suit creators who need both greater volume and polished video exports. Lifetime costs 297.00 USD per once, billed $297 one-time, and includes 10 books per month, Pro features, unwatermarked video export, future features, and founding-member status. Its one-time payment may appeal to long-term users, but it does not raise the stated monthly book limit.

A free trial is available. No seat-based allowance is stated for these plans.

Platforms

AudioBookByMe runs on the web, so it is accessed through a browser rather than a listed desktop or mobile app.

Who it's for

Choose it if you need to convert whole books, including scans, into chapter-aware narration, or if consistent pronunciation and voice cloning matter to your workflow. It is less suitable for occasional listening when the free watermark is unacceptable, for frequent production above the monthly caps, or for users who require a native app.

Pros and cons

Pros

OCR extends conversion to scanned PDFs and page photos, not just text-based documents.
Automatic chapter detection can omit tables of contents, copyright sections, and indexes, preserving a cleaner book structure.
A reusable pronunciation dictionary addresses repeated corrections across chapters.
Defined ACX audio parameters and stated distribution destinations give authors a clear publishing-oriented output path.

Cons

The free plan permits just one monthly conversion and adds a spoken watermark, limiting its usefulness beyond a trial.
Pro is capped at three books monthly, while even Studio and Lifetime specify a 10-book cap.
Pro video exports remain watermarked; unwatermarked 4K-ready video features require Studio or Lifetime.
The service is web-only, which may not suit users who want a dedicated mobile or desktop app.

Alternatives

AI audiobook generators is the broader category to browse when comparing audiobook-making tools.

Consider BookFoundry if you prefer buying a single book credit for 14.99 USD per once, with exports included and credits that do not expire.

Narrated Novels offers a character-based free allowance and a 29.00 USD monthly Professional plan, an alternative for readers comparing usage limits and voice options.

Vox9 is an option for people who want author and listener access across Android, iOS, and web.

AudioPod AI uses credits for text-to-speech and music, with a pay-as-you-go option, so it may suit users seeking metered rather than book-count pricing.

AuthorVoices offers a one-time Economy One-Book Pass for authors buying a single-book production allowance.

Bindery by Infinite Library is another web-based freemium option with free-to-start writing and watermarked proofs.

Musely Audiobook Generator offers a 4.99 USD monthly Writer plan billed annually at $59.9/year, for users comparing a lower-cost paid option.

Kindle Create is a free macOS and Windows book-formatting tool that exports files for publishing through KDP, rather than a narrated-audio service.

Verdict

AudioBookByMe is a strong fit for authors who need scan-aware, chapter-organized narration, pronunciation consistency, or a cloned voice, with a clearly defined audio output profile. Choose Pro for modest monthly production; look elsewhere if you need more than 10 books a month, watermark-free audio on the free plan, or an app outside the browser.
