Overview

The service prepares uploaded manuscripts for narration by detecting chapters and optimizing formatting, then generates audiobook audio. That book-production focus is useful for creators moving a manuscript into audio, but it is not positioned as a general audiobook player. Narrated Novels says it can generate hours of audio in minutes; the practical ceiling for ongoing work is still each plan’s monthly character quota.

Key features

Manuscript preparation and voice choice

Automatic chapter detection and formatting optimization are relevant strengths for book-length text, where preserving structure matters. The voice catalog spans more than 100 professional voices with varied accents, tones, and speaking styles. Starter narrows that choice to 20+ premium voices, so creators who need the widest range must move to a paid plan.

Voice cloning and exports

Users can upload samples to create a custom AI narrator based on their own voice or a preferred voice actor. Professional includes two custom clones and Enterprise includes 10, making these tiers more suitable than Starter for projects that depend on a distinctive narrator. Professional and Enterprise export MP3, M4A, and AAC; Starter is limited to MP3. Completed audiobooks can also be shared directly to social media.

API access

API access is an Enterprise feature. It makes that tier the relevant option for users who need programmatic access; creators producing audiobooks through the service without that requirement can consider Professional instead.

Pricing

Narrated Novels is freemium, with a free Starter plan and a free trial that requires no credit card. Paid subscriptions are billed monthly at the prices below.

Plan	Price	Allowance and features
Starter	Free	5,000 characters/month, 20+ premium voices, MP3-only export, basic support
Professional	29.00 USD per month	100,000 characters/month, 100+ premium voices, all export formats, 2 custom voice clones, priority support
Enterprise	99.00 USD per month	500,000 characters/month, unlimited voices, 10 custom voice clones, API access, dedicated support

Starter is a low-commitment way to try the workflow, but 5,000 characters a month and MP3-only output make it restrictive for substantial book production. At 29.00 USD per month, Professional raises the allowance to 100,000 characters and adds the broader catalog, other export formats, and two clones; it is the most balanced fit for creators producing regularly within that quota. Enterprise costs 99.00 USD per month and is aimed at heavier production or users who need API access, more clones, and dedicated support. Its 500,000-character limit is five times Professional’s, not unlimited production.

Platforms

Narrated Novels is available on the web, with API access included on Enterprise.

Who it's for

Authors and publishers converting manuscripts, and content creators who want to shape a narrator voice, are the clearest fit. Professional is suited to regular production that fits within 100,000 characters per month. Starter works for limited experimentation; Enterprise fits larger monthly workloads or API-dependent workflows. Readers looking for an audiobook listening app should choose a different kind of product.

Pros and cons

Chapter-aware manuscript preparation: detecting chapters and optimizing formatting address structural work before narration.
Flexible narration choices: a catalog of more than 100 voices and custom cloning can support different narrator needs.
Multiple export formats on paid tiers: Professional and Enterprise provide MP3, M4A, and AAC, while Starter is restricted to MP3.
Monthly quotas constrain production: even Enterprise caps usage at 500,000 characters, and Starter’s 5,000-character allowance is small for book-length work.
Clones and API access require paid tiers: Professional includes two clones; API access and 10 clones are reserved for Enterprise.

Alternatives

For a different audiobook workflow, consider AI audiobook generators. AudioBookByMe is another freemium web option: its free plan provides one audiobook conversion a month, 66 voices in eight languages, a free voice-clone trial, and watermarked MP3 downloads. Choose it if that single-conversion allowance and voice set suit your needs.

BookFoundry offers a one-time $14.99 credit for a standard book, with included exports and credits that do not expire. It may suit a one-book project better than a recurring monthly subscription. Vox9 has free author access with 100,000 ElevenLabs characters per month and no credit card required; it is worth considering if that free author allowance is the priority.

AudioPod AI offers a free 1,000-credit monthly Basic plan, with about three minutes of text-to-speech, and supports API, iOS, and web. AuthorVoices offers a one-time $49 Economy One-Book Pass for up to 400,000 characters, suited to a single larger book rather than recurring monthly use.

Bindery by Infinite Library has a free starting option with 800 AI credits after signing in and watermarked proofs. Musely Audiobook Generator offers a free plan with five text generations per day and 25 multimedia credits per 30 days. Kindle Create is a free desktop book-formatting tool for macOS and Windows that exports files for publishing through KDP, rather than an audiobook-generation service.

Verdict

Narrated Novels is a strong fit for authors and other book creators who want chapter-aware conversion, a wide narrator catalog, and voice cloning in one service. Professional is the practical starting point for regular work, while Enterprise is justified by its larger quota or API access. Look elsewhere if your project exceeds those character caps, you need only a one-off conversion, or you want an app for listening rather than making audiobooks.
