In their own words
appleseed
appleseed is a free, open source rendering engine for animation and visual effects, built around physically based global illumination. It is designed for individuals and small studios and runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Rendering methods include unidirectional path tracing, stochastic progressive photon mapping, light tracing, progressive and interactive rendering, and spectral rendering. For shading, it supports Open Shading Language and on-the-fly shader compilation. Production tools include motion blur, AOVs, Cryptomatte, adaptive sampling, denoising, and resumable render checkpoints. Native integrations are listed for Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max, Blender, and Gaffer. It works with OBJ geometry and image formats including OpenEXR, TIFF, HDR, PNG, JPEG, and PSD. Developers can use C++ and Python APIs or extend the engine with external C++ plugins. The listed plan costs nothing and is under the MIT license. The download page lists version 2.1.0-beta, released September 21, 2019.
OctaneRender
OctaneRender is a GPU render engine that OTOY describes as unbiased and spectrally correct. It supports physically based spectral light transport, multiple GPUs, network and volume rendering, and out-of-core textures. Its interactive viewport updates when scene settings change; OTOY says the on-screen view is the final render. Material features include Open Shading Language, procedural materials, complex PBR textures, toon shading, and the OctaneLive material database. OTOY lists more than 21 plugins, including Blender, Cinema 4D, Maya, Houdini, Nuke, and SketchUp, and the.ORBX format supports scene interchange between supported modeling tools. The free Prime tier permits personal and commercial use, with a one-GPU limit and no network rendering. Studio+ costs €19.99 a month billed yearly or €23.95 a month billed monthly, and has a default maximum of 10 render nodes. Windows and Linux require a CUDA 10-capable NVIDIA graphics card; Octane X 2023 and later requires Apple M1 or newer GPUs with macOS 14 or later.
