Overview

Merchants can offer pay-as-you-go, prepaid one-time, and prepaid auto-renew subscriptions, with both product types supported. A customer portal lets subscribers pause, skip, or cancel; payment recovery, churn control, and analytics address the ongoing work of retaining subscribers and planning upcoming orders. This is a substantial toolkit for a Shopify subscription business, though it has no reach beyond Shopify and Shopify Plus.

Key features

The subscription widget can be placed on product, home, collection, quick-view, and cart pages and customized to match a store’s branding. Build-a-box and loyalty motivations give merchants additional ways to shape offers. Product-level forecasting for upcoming orders and performance analytics can help with planning, while APIs let development teams create custom subscription experiences.

Appstle supports Shopify Payments, Authorize.net, and PayPal for recurring payments, and is compatible with Shopify 2.0. Its integrations include Checkout, Customer accounts, Shopify POS, Shopify Flow, Shopify Admin, Gorgias, Growave, Klaviyo, PageFly, Stripe, and Zapier. That range connects the subscription setup with store operations and other services, though merchants should confirm that their required workflow fits these integrations.

Merchants moving from another subscription app or platform can use Appstle’s white-glove migration service. The company also advertises 24/7/365 merchant support. GDPR and data-protection compliance are stated, while the app can access personal and technical customer data, including contact details, address, geolocation, IP address, browser, and operating system; that access is worth weighing when assessing a store’s data practices.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and caps subscription sales at $500 per month. It includes pay-as-you-go and prepaid subscriptions and 24/7 human support, making it a low-risk starting point for a small store, but the revenue ceiling is restrictive as sales grow.

Starter costs 10.00 USD per month, or $96/year with 20% savings, and allows up to $5,000/month in subscription revenue. It has a 14-day free trial and 0% transaction fee with no hidden charges. This is the next step for a store that outgrows the free cap without approaching the higher revenue bands.

Business (Biz) costs 30.00 USD per month, or $288/year with 20% savings, and covers up to $15,000/month in subscription revenue. It also has a 14-day free trial and 0% transaction fee with no hidden charges. Business Premium costs 100.00 USD per month, or $960/year with 20% savings, for up to $100,000/month in subscription revenue, with the same trial and fee terms. Those rising caps give growing merchants a clear progression, but each tier’s value depends on whether expected subscription revenue fits its limit.

Enterprise has custom pricing and includes APIs and webhooks. Merchants who need that tier should weigh the custom quote against the limits of the fixed-price plans. The free tier’s $500 monthly cap and paid tiers’ revenue ceilings matter more than transaction fees for choosing a plan.

Platforms

Appstle’s platform availability is api and web, but its subscription suite is exclusively for Shopify and Shopify Plus merchants. It is not the right fit for a store built on another commerce platform.

Who it's for

Appstle suits Shopify merchants who want flexible prepaid and recurring offers, self-service subscription controls, and retention and forecasting tools in one subscription setup. Its free tier gives small stores room to begin, while higher revenue caps serve merchants scaling subscription sales. Stores outside Shopify, or those expecting sales beyond a plan’s cap, should look elsewhere or consider Enterprise.

Pros and cons

Pros: Pay-as-you-go and two prepaid models, plus a portal for pause, skip, and cancellation, cover common subscription and self-service needs.
Pros: Widget placement across five store page types, branding customization, build-a-box, and loyalty motivations give merchants flexibility in presenting offers.
Pros: Free entry, 0% transaction fees on paid plans, and revenue-based tiers provide a path from small-scale sales to a $100,000/month cap.
Cons: Shopify and Shopify Plus exclusivity rules out merchants on other platforms.
Cons: The free plan stops at $500/month in subscription sales, and the paid tiers still impose revenue ceilings.

Alternatives

Consider subscription ecommerce software if you want to compare options across the category. PayWhirl is another freemium option with a free plan; its stated Starter plan is free but charges 3.0% per transaction, with payment gateway processing fees also applying. Seal Subscriptions offers a lower-cost paid entry, with SUPERSALE at 5.95 USD per month for 100 total subscriptions and a 30-day free trial.

Lesuto is worth considering if Android or iOS support matters, alongside API and web platforms. Loop Subscriptions has a free plan capped at 50 active subscriptions and includes a mobile-friendly customer portal, alerts, and growth and revenue analytics. Recurpay offers a free development-store plan with subscription analytics, a customer portal, and automatic payment recovery.

Subi Subscriptions is another freemium alternative with a free plan for development stores and no transaction fees. RecurrinGO! has a free plan for development stores. Subbly is an alternative with Android, iOS, API, and web platforms, but no free plan.

Verdict

Choose Appstle if you run a Shopify or Shopify Plus store and want subscription self-service, multiple billing models, and retention tools with a free starting tier. Its strongest case is breadth within Shopify; its clearest reason to look elsewhere is the platform lock-in, followed by revenue caps that may force a tier change as sales rise.
